History

Freeport was first settled around the year 1700 and obtained its current name “Freeport” on February 14, 1789. It was named after the openness of its harbor, as it is situated on Casco Bay. It was once the home to leading timber, farming, and shipbuilding industries but is now known, however, for its numerous outlet stores, the LL Bean headquarters, the Desert of Maine, and Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park. Freeport developed as four villages, all of which are presently part of the Harraseeket Historic District.

Visiting Freeport in late December or the entire month of January should be avoided entirely because this time usually sees a high level of precipitation. Because of its close proximity to the sea, Freeport does not tend to get a lot of snowfall, but winter temperatures tend to be frigid.
