  • The history of Carmel by the Sea starts in 1603 with Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcanio. Sebastian anchored his ship on the shores of California, coming upon the beautiful sights of Carmel Bay. Vizcanio named this beautiful place Carmelo, in honor of three Carmelite friars that were traveling with him. Over the years Carmelo wasn’t anything but a small settlement that only emphasized the beautiful landscape. It wasn't until the 1900’s when Carmel by the Sea started to transform into the creative artist colony it is today. In 1902 cypress trees were planted and “The First Murphy House” was built along the barren coastinel, creating the fairytale ambiance Carmel by the Sea is known for today.Carmel by the Sea caught the spotlight in 1986, when Hollywood star Clint Eastwood ran for mayor. Eastwood was a long time resident of Carmel and was elected, serving a two year term. During his years of service Eastwood supported Carmel business and infrastructure, helping Carmel progress to the city it is today. Eastwoods term also brought international fame to Carmel by the Sea, making it a well known, worldwide attraction.
