Bastrop State Park is just over two miles away and known for its Lost Pines forest, hiking, biking, and outdoor swimming. With a fireplace on both floors, the upstairs has three inviting, serene bedrooms and two recently updated baths (one with a clawfoot tub and a view of treetops and sky and the other with a waterfall shower). You can enjoy your coffee and breakfast in the morning or drinks and hors d'oeuvres in the evening on the breezy, upstairs (and screened-in!) sitting porch with views of the sky, birds and the garden’s enormous bay trees. Downstairs, the dining room, living room and parlor are welcoming communal spaces, while the kitchen is a chef’s dream with cast iron pots and cooking ware collected over the years by Catine Perkins, a noted organic gardener, cook and artist. Coffee and tea are ready to be made, and if you wish to cook, you can check out the chicken coop in the back for eggs, pick out fresh herbs in the garden, and use whatever condiments are available in the kitchen. There are plentiful places to shop for groceries nearby. This beautiful and spacious home is one of the oldest in Bastrop and was purchased by Robert and Catine Perkins in 1959. Catine was a strong proponent of historical preservation, organic gardening and preventive medicine. People would come from miles around to see her yard filled with irises, day lilies, poppies, antique roses, and culinary herbs. An extraordinary cook, she held herb classes for the young staff at Whole Foods when it first opened In Austin, as well as supplying herbs to some of the top local Austin restaurants at the time.
