The Mason House Bed & Breakfast Inn in historic Bentonsport, Iowa, is nestled on the banks of the beautiful Des Moines River. (Bentonsport is one of the Van Buren County villages that were among Iowa’s very first settlements.) The Mason House Inn is a fine bed and breakfast in the heart of the Midwest. Today, the tradition continues with your hosts, the Hansons. The Mason House was built in 1846 to serve steamboat travelers going from St. Louis to Des Moines. It was constructed by Mormon craftsmen who stayed in Bentonsport three years while making their famous trek to Utah. Travelers received quality hosting then, and that tradition continues today. In 1989 the inn underwent extensive refurbishing. This included remodeling an old railroad station and connecting it to the Mason House, providing for ground level accommodations with separate entrances, king size beds, and private baths. Guests are invited to use every room ~ and enjoy! In 2006, a caboose was added to the property and is now a Cottage. It has a full kitchen, bathroom with shower, a queen bed, a TV in the bedroom, and a private porch facing the river. Perfect for a romantic getaway! There’s a cookie jar in every room. Each of the nine guestrooms has a private bath with shower. Full Country Breakfast at the hour of your choice is served in the Main House dining room. Private Romantic Cottage Available. Murder Mystery Weekends. Ghost hunting classes. Free Wi-Fi is available in all rooms. Owners have cats on the premises. Special dietary concerns can be accommodated, please mention at the time you make your reservation. There are many antique and craft shops near the inn. The village has a variety of both, including a pottery and blacksmith shop. Shops in Bentonsport are open April through November. Chuck and Joy will be glad to direct you to other activities within an hour’s drive. The wild night-life in Bentonsport consists mainly of owls, bald eagles, and frogs, along the lazy Des Moines River. However, the Hansons would be happy to recommend several nice restaurants within a few miles. The Mason House is excellent for small retreats, family reunions and business seminars (24 maximum). Come see us at the Mason House Inn, the oldest steamboat hotel on the Des Moines River.

Nestled along the banks of the Iowa River, just off Interstate 80 and close to Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, you’ll find a rare peace and tranquility in a former utopian German community. Welcome to Die Heimat Country Inn, offering couples and groups a chance to rekindle love and friendship and to “come back home”. Die Heimat Country Inn B&B is located in the picturesque little village of Homestead, one of the seven villages of the Amana Colonies. Ours is a rich history; legend has it that Die Heimat was a stagecoach stop in the 1850s. Die Heimat also operated as an Amana communal kitchen. In 1960, Die Heimat was renovated to accommodate the travelers who have found a warm welcome for nearly sixty years! Die Heimat is a perfect blend of history and modern comforts. Its decor is in keeping with Amana traditions, such as “Amana-blue” walls and Amana-made furniture. Ours is a simple wooden structure, with the charm and quirks of an 1850’s building. We provide guests with enhanced amenities and an experience of “Gemutlichkeit” (friendly and welcoming).

This great brick building at 707 Avenue H was built in the 1860’s. It has had many lives before becoming a hotel. From it's beginnings as the Windmayer Whiskey & Vinegar Distillery from 1861 to 1895, to a restaurant, a book & wallpaper store to a barber shop in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. But in 1910, Troy Laundry moved from 905 Avenue G (current day Pilot Grove Savings Bank) to the present day Kingsley Inn. The business thrived for many years until 1981. 71 one years in one location is quite a run! Then our building became home to Shilling Electrical Supply for a few years until sitting vacant and becoming the beautiful, historic and elegant Kingsley Inn, in 1990.

A work in progress, I acquired the property in Aug of 2013. She is a fine B&B and Tea Room. Also on the property is a 8 door Coach House that housed the hearse over the years, starting with a horse drawn model . we hold Murder Mystery Parties, after parties and much more!

Explore Bed and Breakfasts in Iowa

Iowa has some fantastic & historic b&b’s that have welcomed in visitors from across the United States for years, and beckoned folks to come enjoy one of the lesser talked about states in the country.

From Dubuque along the Mississippi River to Des Moines, Iowa has more than enough to keep you entertained and even delight you as  you come visit the state. Delicious food, craft breweries, hiking  trails, and even nightlife and entertainment can all be found in Iowa.

Have you heard about the Amana? Registered as a National Historic Landmark, the seven Amana Colonies were completely self-sufficient up until 1932, with their own  language and systems that allowed them to thrive. Definitely worth  checking out on your visit!

When it comes to a Bed and Breakfast Iowa style, expect a hearty breakfast in a historic farm house, or a cozy getaway in a victorian. Besides exploring the main cities (Des Moines), check out other gems like Iowa City or Elkader. These slices of pure Americana are worth seeing to get a glimpse of what simpler times were like.

Check out the Queen Anne b&b near Ames, Iowa, for a perfect example of something you might stay in on your visit to the Hawkeye State.

    Natural Features

  • Iowa has a picturesque and beautiful landscape complete with rolling hills,  rustic farms, and plentiful prairies throughout the state.

The Mississippi River makes up the entire eastern border of the state, and contains tons of towns and cities along its berth.

The soil is rich and one of the reasons that Iowa is one of the largest powerhouse farming states across America. As  you’re driving through the Hawkeye State, you’ll see countless farms  along the way. In fact, rumour has it that there are more cattle than  people in Iowa!

  • Things to do

  • There are tons of things to do in Iowa, and many of the coolest little towns are nestled along the Mississippi River. Like Bellevue or Sabula for instance. Sabula happens to be the only island city in the whole of Iowa!

The  state has tons of great eateries and breweries if you’re into that sort  of thing, as well as loads of history & sightseeing. The Native  American history by itself is worth discovering.

Okoboji is a lake destination in Iowa, located in the Iowa Great Lakes Region. Rent a boat and have a day out on the water with  your pals! There’s even a mini-amusement park located right along the  lake!

  • History

  • Iowa’s history is deeply integrated with that of the Native Americans, who lived in Iowa for much of the 18th century and 19th century, until it became a part of the United States of America following the Louisiana Purchase. Iowa supplied a large number of men to fight in the American Civil War.

Primarily known as an agricultural state by those outside of the Midwest, Iowa has since become a more balanced and modern state with manufacturing,  finance, and other assorted industries popping up over the years.

Iowa is still evolving and continues to be a fascinating case study of a  traditional rural & farm heavy state morphing into a “modern state”.

  • Activities

  • As far as activities, the Amana Colonies should surely be near the top of your list. These fascinating  colonies were entirely self sufficient for 80 years, and had their own  customs, culture, language, and traditions. Not to mention their own  economy! The Great Depression put in an end to their self sufficiency,  but the pure ingenuity of these settlers is worth learning about.

If you’re bringing family on your vacation, visit Adventureland Park in Altoona, Iowa. All that Iowa space has allowed the Park to build some of the fastest and most  exhilarating roller coasters in the Midwest on 180 acres of land.

Maquoketa Caves State Park or Pikes Peak State Park are awesome choices if you’re looking to explore and get some fresh air.

Into Politics? Iowa is always in the national spotlight when it comes to elections due to  the first in the nation caucasus that shape the political picture for  America as a whole.

  • Weather

  • Iowa’ got a classic “four season climate”  with some really cold winters, and warm summers. It doesn’t snow as  much as you might expect but be sure to bring layers and a snow jacket  just in case. Layering is always the advice when it comes to  unpredictable winters like Iowa has.

The  Hawkeye State does get some heavy rainfall in the summer, most notably  in 2008 when they had disastrous flooding that wrecked much of the  state.

When packing make sure you have a rain jacket or two if  you’re planning on coming in the summer. Besides that, typical summer  outfits will do the trick!

  • Food and Drink

  • Iowa’s  unique farmland history makes it a delicious place to dine, which  should be another nudge that you’re picking a great place for your  b&b getaway. Food Network has this incredible graphic showing some of the best Iowa eats & dishes.

Since Iowa produces the most pork in the country, dishes like Breaded Pork Sandwiches are absolutely to die for. You can’t leave Iowa without having a Maid-Rite Sandwich, an Iowa invention. Savory ground beef topped with mustard, ketchup, onion, and pickles...you can’t beat it and you’ve got to try it.

The local beer scene is extremely strong and the cream of the crop in Iowa is Toppling Goliath brewery in Decorah. Folks come from and wide from across the United States to try rare releases or small batch taste tests.

Eating and drinking are more than good in Iowa. They’re great.

  • Why Stay at a Bed & Breakfast in Iowa?

Iowa might not be the flashiest name in the galaxy when it comes to staying  at a bed & breakfast, but isn’t life about exploring outside the  beaten path? You’ll be charmed when you come to Iowa, and pair that with incredible modern amenities and you’ve got a winning combination.

Imagine your own romantic getaway, nestled in a secluded and private victorian home as you soak in the rural beauty of Iowa.

  • What type of amenities can I expect when booking an Iowa B&B?

Iowa has all of the modern amenities you crave paired with a down to earth sense of self, a vibe the Midwest is famous for.

A full breakfast goes without saying at an Iowa bed and breakfast.  Delicious homecooked meals featuring pancakes, eggs benedict, and other  hearty favorites is usually a staple of these Hawkeye joints.

Guests rooms feature wifi, private baths, a whirlpool bath, and super comfy beds you’d expect at a top tier hotel. Even if you’re staying in a guesthouse, expect your host to make sure your stay is nothing less than exceptional.

Some properties even feature a full kitchen, jacuzzi and an outdoor fire pit for when it gets a little bit chilly outside!

  • How can I get around Iowa?

If you’re traveling around Iowa you’re definitely going to want a car. Even though Iowa isn’t a large state by any means, the relatively small population means  that mass transportation infrastructure isn’t needed, so rent that car!

Des Moines is where the main airport in Iowa is located, and is a convenient distance away from other midwestern cities, and huge hubs like Chicago.

Cedar Rapids also has an airport serving eastern Iowa, although it’s much smaller and only has regional flights coming through.

  • What Are the Different Types of B&Bs in Iowa?

If you’re looking for a romantic bed and breakfast Iowa style, there are tons of good options to ensure your vacation is a roaring success.

Zuber’s Homestead Hotel is located in one of the seven historic villages of the Amana Colonies. 15 richly appointed guest rooms to kick back, relax, and enjoy the full breakfast on offer at this gem.

Another one of the best Iowa bed and breakfast options is Die Heimat Country Inn.  Set in a former stagecoach stop from the 19th century, the Inn provides  old world charm combined with cutting edge amenities like free wifi, a fireplace in your room, and a spacious parking lot to slide in & out of.

Here we want to cover the different types of B&Bs available and focus on hitting key search terms for specific queries.

We  can base this section on total reviews for the search query “best”. If  there is a Diamond Collection Member in the destination that you are  writing about include those properties first.  If there are no Diamond  Members then start with the properties that are listed first on the page  and go down from there.  The reason for this is that the properties  that are listed first pay the most:
