Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas both stopped in the town when they were campaigning for political office. Perhaps most significantly, Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the United States lived in Galena for a short time, and often returned for visits. Visitors to Galena can tour his former home.
