In 1791, Gaspar Garcia built a home on land bequeathed to him by the King of Spain. Little did he know that someday that home would become one of the premier St. Augustine, FL Bed and Breakfast locations, which would bring the best of modern sensibility to America’s oldest city.
History of St. Augustine
Founded decades before the establishment of Jamestown, Virginia and prior to the landing on Plymouth Rock, St. Augustine is a positive embrace of the history of early America. Many of the buildings date all the way back to between 1703 and 1821, and were crafted from locally quarried coquina stone. But St. Augustine is not stuck in time: after a massive renovation of the central districts in the 1970s, the city is a cornucopia of stimulation and enjoyment. The brick and cobblestone paved pedestrian-only streets are lined with world-class restaurants, shops, museums, art galleries, and antique stores. Horse-drawn carriages and local trollies carry visitors through history, from The Oldest House to harbor cruises. Time your visit to your choice of street fairs, festivals and special celebrations, where so much is within easy walking distance.
History Meets Luxury
At the center of all this St. Augustine history is an oasis of comfort with an eye toward the practicalities of the future, is the St. Francis Inn a St. Augustine, FL Bed and Breakfast steeped in history. Enter from St. George Street, through a wrought-iron gateway, into an award-winning garden. In the cool lobby, register for your stay in one of the many options, from the affordable simplicity of The Graham Room to the apartment-style luxury of Sailor’s Rest. Join other residents for the evening social hour, featuring a complimentary beverage and scrumptious homemade desserts. Sit on your balcony or porch, and oversee the banana tree and bougainvillea flowers. Take a dip in the temperature-controlled swimming pool, which can offer year-round enjoyment. Guests receive a free pass to the St Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum and a discount to The Oldest House.
Yet, in all this history and natural beauty, the needs of modern society are not forgotten. The St. Francis Inn is award-winning not just for its garden, but for its environmental awareness when it was granted “Two Palms” in the Florida Green Lodging designation. The Inn assures recycling, minimal water usage in the gardens, and safe, clean electric fireplaces. Electric vehicle charging is available as well, in the off-street parking. The past truly meets the present at the St. Francis Inn.
Warm Welcome from the Innkeepers
Innkeepers Joe and Margaret Finnegan look forward to sharing their beloved St. Augustine with you. In the heart of town, yet privately placed, the history of the Inn is a story unto itself. Owned for decades by sea captains and military officers, it eventually passed into a phase of literary and publishing history in the 20th century. Now family-owned, the owners take part in many civic efforts, such as preserving a nearby park, and assuring their beautiful inn features a light carbon footprint. The Finnegans look forward to serving you a bountiful breakfast in the dining room, in your own room or, weather permitting, in the courtyard. Weekend brunch features complimentary Mimosas or Bloody Marys and is served at extended hours.
The St. Francis Inn is truly your gateway to Florida’s Atlantic Coast, and our nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine, Florida.
