    History

  • The Europeans first settled in York in 1624. The original plantation was known as Agamenticus and sat on the York River. The settlers would face attacks by Indians which eventually  ceased when the 1763 Treaty of Paris was signed. Finally, with peace,  the area thrived and became a major trading location. Lumber and  agricultural products were shipped out for molasses and sugar, and other  items. In time, York would become a beloved summer resort. Nowadays, many visitors flock to  the area to visit the museums and view the lovely historical buildings  and residences that dot the countryside.

  • Activities

  • As one of the oldest cities in the U.S. many visit York for its history. The beautiful beaches, diverse shopping, and numerous  restaurants are all big draws. Whether you want to sunbathe, play in the  surf, or build sandcastles, the beaches are a great place to spend the  afternoon.

If you love animals, why not visit the only zoo and amusement park combo in New England known as York’s the Wild Kingdom.  There is the interactive Butterfly Kingdom, birds, lions, zebras, and  more. Plus, carnival-style rides, bumper cars, and mini-golf.

History buffs might want to explore the Old Burying Ground which is home to graves that date back to the 1690s. Contact the Old York Historical Society for tours. You can also view John Hancock’s warehouse and the Old Gaol  along with many colonial-era homes and the historic school.
