  • Did you know that Wausau was settled in early 1839 as a logging and sawmill town? The town was  first known as Big Bull Falls. However, in 1850 it was officially  renamed Wausau.  Note that the Ojibwe Indians hunted for big game and grew potatoes,  corn, and oats, in this area before the US government removed them in  1836.

    A treaty in 1836 transferred land along the famous Wisconsin River and surrounding areas from these Indians to ownership of the  federal government. Walter McIndoe was one of the first individuals to  take the lead in local business as well as in the growth and prosperity  of the community. Keep in mind that Walter McIndoe arrived in 1846, and  because of his constant efforts and struggle, Marathon County was  finally organized in 1850.
