  • According to archaeologists, the history of Sedona dates back about 10,000 years when the Native American cave dwellers (first settlers) occupied the caves around and in the Sedona area. In 1583, a Spanish expedition looking for Indian mines discovered the Sedona area. Sedona started as a remote and small farming and ranching settlement in 1876  when John James Thompson, the 1st permanent settler, settled down in Oak Creek Canyon.  Around 24 families resided in the settlement by the early 1990s.  Theodore Schnebly filed a petition for a new postal station in 1902.
