The summer is primetime in Ogunquit, and flocks of people love exploring the town. Bring a bathing suit if you’re itching to take a dip, and get out those summer clothes to soak up the sun. At nights, it can get a little chilly so bring a light jacket and a rain jacket in case rain is in the forecast!
Ogunquit is basically a long sandy stretch of beach with some grassy dunes thrown in for good measure. You might want to think twice before jumping in the water if it’s not summer, as it can be extremely cold around the Ocean!
The ocean is the main attraction and the town has been built around fishing going back hundreds of years. If you walk Marginal Way you’ll be able to see the majority of the coastline in the town, and Perkins Cove will allow you to see how the town originally formed around the Cove as a fishing village.
Ogunquit means “beautiful place by the sea” in the native Abenaki language, and over time transformed from a maritime village into somewhat of a small art colony. Due to its proximity to the beach and attractions like Perkins Cove, there was an influx of summer vacationers and so hotels & bed and breakfast started to pop up around the town.
Today, gay bed and breakfast Ogunquit Maine are thriving due to the large LGBT community of businesses around the village. Ogunquit was named America’s Best Coastal Small Town in USA Today’s Readers Choice Awards in 2016!
The top activities in Ogunquit without a doubt are Marginal Way and Perkins Cove. Marginal Way is an incredible seaside walk that winds around the town, so whether you’re walking with a cup of coffee in the morning or a succulent lobster roll during the day, this is the walk most folks make.
Perkins Cove is your traditional New England fishing village, complete with local fishermans and stands serving up favorites like piping hot clam chowder (clam chowda in local speak). Ogunquit Playhouse is a great place to see a play and the thriving arts scene here means that the art galleries can’t be passed over either.
Check out the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, which features local artists from around Maine and is set on the waterside in a lovely little venue. You’ll catch ocean views while you’re browsing, so this is the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon. If you’re into art, we’re guessing you might like plays also, so be sure to study the Ogunquit Playhouse schedule before you arrive to see if there are any plays you might be interested in!
NewEngland.com raves about Marginal Way and rightly so. Bring your furry pal and stroll the oceanside path that’ll take you around the town.
If you’re in Ogunquit, you cannot leave without getting a delicious bowl of clam chowder or a delicious lobster roll with butter from Perkins Cove. Since Ogunquit was originally a fishing village, there’s a deep legacy of amazing seafood that permeates most of New England.
Maine’s lobster is not only nationally renowned, but famous worldwide for its incredible texture and taste. Be sure to stop by one of the local stands or vendors and dive in. Soak your lobster in melted butter, sit back with a beer, and enjoy Maine baby!

Amenities in Ogunquit Maine rival any bed and breakfast in New England, and really any b&b across the United States! Guest rooms feature all of the usuals like air conditioning, a hair dryer, private baths...you know, the usual stuff. However, some of the more upscale options might have a hot tub or kitchenettes, as well as stunning ocean views that Ogunquit is famous for!
With everything happening with covid, check-in is often contactless and seamless to avoid exposure. Your innkeepers will definitely fix up the guest rooms to make them pristine on your arrival, and give you more than enough information about Ogunquit to send you on your way.
As mentioned, a minute walk should get you to the heart of downtown, so don’t plan on driving too much!
Ogunquit is fairly remote so we definitely recommend renting a car so you can easily traverse Maine and see all of the wonderful sites & destinations across New England. Public transport is extremely limited as you’d imagine, so that’s just another reason you’re better off renting a car.
As far as airports go, Portland International (PWM) is probably your best bet. PWM is the busiest & largest airport in Maine so naturally it has the most routes in the state. Fly into Portland, and then rent a car!
Everything is pretty much a short walk around the town, which is a major perk!
For such a tiny little town, Ogunquit actually has a good amount of amazing bed and breakfast options for you to choose from.
