Ocean City, Maryland was once home to the Algonquian tribes who would fish from the area's beaches. In 1524, Giovanni da Verrazano came to the area to survey the region. Eventually, an influx of British colonists decided on the area A barrier island, the Ocean City became a small fishing village. In 1875, the Atlantic Hotel was constructed, and people started visiting the area to enjoy the beach on holiday. Soon the railroad built a bridge across the Sinepuxent Bay which enabled even more tourists to visit the region and it quickly became known as a resort town.
By 1878, the Coast Guard built a station in the town and eventually a second station was also constructed as Ocean City, Maryland became the service’s headquarters for the region’s life-saving efforts.
In 1900, the town’s famous boardwalk was constructed. Trimper’s Amusement park also opened its doors. Interestingly, in the early days the boardwalk was temporary. Every winter, the town would have the boards gifted and stored until spring. Nowadays, they no longer do that though.
Expect warm and muggy summers with summertime temperature that tend to hover around 84 degrees F. and rarely exceed 90 degrees F. In the winter things turn chilly as the wind comes in off the Atlantic. The weather turns wet and cold. In addition, most of the winter is partly cloudy which can make the time seem dreary.
