In 2000, a local Sonoma winemaker approached former Four Sisters Inns President Shelley Post to discuss a piece of property he owned in town, just a block off the Sonoma Plaza. She agreed that the location seemed ideal for a small hotel, perfect for guests who would enjoy walking right out the door to the shops, restaurants and historic attractions such as the 1823 Mission San Francisco Solano. Construction of the Inn at Sonoma took place in 2002, with Shelley applying her innkeeper’s eye to all phases of development. She worked closely with California designer Shirley Jensen to create a warm and hospitable environment, in sync with the casual Sonoma wine country lifestyle. Their instincts were spot-on; from the moment it opened, Inn at Sonoma has been a favorite with visitors who appreciate special touches like the outdoor hot tub and fireplaces in every guest room. In 2013, a detached cottage on the property was completely remodeled adding eight guestrooms to the Inn at Sonoma. Rooms in the Vintner’s Cottage boast either one king or two queen beds, each with a fireplace, and four with jetted tubs.

This charming Victorian country inn was built by J.F. Gosby, a native of Nova Scotia and a cobbler by trade. He began building the home in 1886 and took up residence there in 1888. Gosby opened his home to seasonal visitors attending the various religious and educational meetings held all summer long in Pacific Grove. Gosby never seemed to have enough rooms for all who wished to stay, and he enlarged the inn several times. The inn is an excellent example of the Queen Ann architecture, with a rounded corner tower, variety of surface textures and bay windows. Called El Carmelo Hotel by previous owners, the Gosby House Inn gained its current name and appearance in 1978 when it was purchased and restored by the Post family. Following the Green Gables Inn, it became the second property in the Four Sisters Inns collection. The thorough refurbishing of this lovely structure shows the careful research that went into returning it to its original state. The interior has been thoughtfully decorated with beautiful antiques. The exterior, with its cheerful yellow paint and welcoming front porch, is among the most attractive of the restored buildings in Pacific Grove.

  • History

  • In the 1700s, Spanish missionaries arrived in the rugged and unsettled lands of California to spread Catholicism. They would establish 21 Spanish missions from San Diego de Alcala to San Francisco de Solano. The picturesque missions were all constructed from 1769 to 1833.

Today, five must-see missions stand out as ideal places to visit and explore: Mission San Diego de Alcala, Mission San Luis Obispo, Mission Santa Barbara, Mission San Miguel Archangel& Mission San Juan Capistrano

By 1847, California would be recognized as a U.S. territory and by 1848 gold would be discovered at Sutter’s Mill which would harken a rush of gold-seekers that was unparalleled in American history. Everyone wanted to strike it rich by finding their fortune in the creeks and countryside of the region.

In 1850, California was declared the 31st state. Today it is the third biggest state and follows only Alaska and Texas for sheer size. It is now home to millions of acres of farmland which makes it the leader in all agricultural production in the United States. In addition, it has the reputation of being a tourist hotspot with attractions like Yosemite National Park, Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Alcatraz, Disneyland, and Angel Island.

  • Although the terrain of California varies, the weather is typically mild in most areas with the average temperature holding at around 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 80 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. The days are usually sunny and there is extraordinarily little rain. The average humidity holds at around 65 percent. One nice perk about Cali is that the nights are usually very mild.
