The area now known as the Hamptons was inhabited by indidgenous people for thousands of years before Europeans came. The Algonquian-speaking Pequot people lived in East Hampton and controlled most of eastern Long Island. Native Chief Wyandanch negotiated to sale the land in East Hampton to English colonists in the late 17th century. Many of the indigenous people died from a series of smallpox epidemics in the 17th and 18th centuries and their numbers dwindled as more Europeans came to the area. East Hampton was New York’s first English settlement. The town was originally named Maidstone after a town in England but was later renamed Easthampton to go along with the geographic town names of Westhampton and Easthampton. Since that time, the town name was eventually divided into two words.
The Hamptons have mastered the art of the high class casual, and their restaurant scene is no different. Almost any kind of cuisine can be found in East Hampton. The Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center educates visitors about the history of the indegenous Shinnecock tribe who lived in the area for 10,000 years. The weather in East Hampton varies seasonally and has led to the resort town seeing a huge surge of visitors in the summertime and very quiet winters. In the summer, the weather is usually dry and warm with lots of sunshine and very few storms. It's a busy time to visit the Hamptons and traffic can make it very slow to travel from place to place around East Hampton. However, it’s the most beautiful time to go and the warmest time of year to enjoy a swim at the beach. In the winter, the weather is typically cool and wet. There are frequent coastal storms in the winter which typically result in rainfall. It rarely snows. These unfavorable conditions mean that winter is not a popular tourist season for East Hampton.
MacArthur Airport is the closest commercial airport to East Hampton at approximately 50 miles away. Kennedy Airport is 80 Miles Away while La Guardia is about 85 miles away. Private planes and small charters can fly directly to East Hampton, and is the most convenient way to travel, although it can be quite expensive. Rental cars are available at the various airports. For those traveling by car, the long Island Expressway and Route 27 are the main ways to access the island. The Hampton Jitney Bus travels between New York City and the villages of the Hamptons. The Montauk Branch of Long Island Railroad is one of the most economical way to reach the Hamptons. It makes stops in several villages.
