Alexandra's House was custom built in 2008 as a Bed & Breakfast and is the final result of five years of planning. We wanted to build an inn in the Texas Hill Country where we could provide our guests with cozy ambience and with modern amenities . . . just the right mix of the old and new. Having a bed & breakfast that harkens back to an earlier era and provides 21st century amenities was always part of our goal. As an artist and a former restaurant owner in Houston, Rosemary honed her culinary, hospitality and business skills before coming to the Hill Country. She has always enjoyed cooking, meeting new people and making them feel welcome. Her artistic skills run through her family and lead back to her great grandfather, the eminent Gilded Age painter and naturalist Abbott H. Thayer. We purchased 5 wooded acres in 2002 and sought advice from land preservation companies about how to manage it without destroying its natural habitats and wildlife. We cleared many of the cedar trees to showcase the abundant live oaks and cedar elms. We have a wide variety of wildflowers that bloom almost every season, attracting birds and butterflies. We worked with an architect to design a traditional farmhouse with a modern, open floor plan that is inviting to guests. We researched green building and energy efficiency in order to minimize our impact on the environment. The result is a magnificent Craftsman house with charm from earlier times and all the modern amenities of today. Our inn is filled with family antiques, personal art work and photography, books, and quilts made by our ancestors. The interior features wood floors, numerous windows, a wide hallway/corridor lighted with hand-crafted blown glass sconces and a table lamp from our neighbor Wimberley Glass Works. The kitchen is open to guests and is centered by a butcher block countertop. We continue to work on the land and have added a fountain, garden planters for herbs, and a vegetable garden. A running stream with ponds, falls and lichen-covered rocks provide a tranquil spot for guests to relax and meditate on the sounds of babbling water. As you sit quietly on the wrap-around porch while listening to the wind chimes, you may see our grey fox, deer, wild turkey, road runners and other critters that roam our land. We are pleased with the results. ... show more...
