About The Property

This beautiful National Register Victorian house (formerly known as The Mead House) was built in 1882 and became the home of Dr. Jerry Morris Hyde and the Hyde Family descendants for almost 90 years. Originally built by Dr. I. P. Primrose for his daughter Sarah and her new husband, it was sold to Dr. Hyde in 1890. The two doctors were friends, neighbors and also partners in several Nelsonville real estate ventures. When the last Hyde descendant passed away in 1977, the house became a succession of homes, rentals and student housing, until it was rescued and beautifully restored as a Bed & Breakfast by Michael and Sheila Mark in 2006. In 2009 long-time Bed and Breakfast entrepreneur and history lover Sue Maxwell became owner. Sue carried own the B&B tradition until 2016. Sue owns the Primrose Bed & Breakfast across the street. Carrying on Sue's tradition we hope you enjoy being able to “Sleep with History” at the Hyde House in Nelsonville! The Hyde House estate has a large wrap around front porch with plenty of sitting, lots of space for relaxing. The estate has a lovely dining area, sitting room, parlor room and four well appointed bedrooms & 4 1/2 bathrooms. Each guest will have a comfortable colorful room with private bath. Two bedrooms have a tiger claw soaking tubs. Only 1 block from Nelsonville Square and closely situated to Wayne National Forest and 18 minutes from Lake Hope State Park in Zaleski State Forest with miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. The 120-acre Lake Hope is perfect for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, picnicking and swimming. Our guests will definitely want to visit Nelsonville's Historic Arts District with Stuart's Opera House, Hocking College and the Nelsonville Music Festival. At Hyde House Bed & Breakfast cyclists are a few miles away from one of Ohio's most challenging climbs, Lick Run Hill, with it's double 's' turn at a 19% grade. ATV enthusiasts are just minutes from the Dorr Run Trail Head with over 75 miles of designated trails for off-road vehicle riders, mountain bikers and hikers through the Wayne National Forest. The Hyde House is 15 minutes west of Athens and Ohio University and 15 minutes east of Old Man's Cave. It's perfect for parents and alumni visiting OU and perfect for a weekend visiting Ohio's famous Hocking Hills, named as one of Buzzfeed's stunning under-the-radar destinations to add to your bucket list.
