This Hannibal, MO Bed & Breakfast is a piece of literary history!
Right along the border of Missouri and Illinois, is the city of Hannibal. This river community is known for being the 19th-century boyhood home to Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. This city inspired the setting for Twain’s novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
The Garth Woodside Mansion, an impressive Hannibal, MO bed and breakfast sitting on a tranquil 36-acre estate, was built in 1871 and has played an important role in the life of the town. Past owners, John and Helen Kercheval Garth were good friends of Mark Twain. During his many trips back to Hannibal, Mark Twain would often stay with the Garth family, who were well-to-do tobacco & cigar manufacturers. It is said that John Garth was one of the boyhood friends who inspired the character Tom Sawyer.
The Garth Woodside Mansion Today
The current owners, John and Julie Rolsen, acquired Garth Woodside Mansion in the 1990’s after touring B&Bs from coast to coast, reading up on running a B&B, and talking to countless innkeepers on the “inns” and outs of innkeeping. Finally, the Rolsens went to Hannibal and fell in love with the mansion, the history, and the town. After a few days in the area, they decided to buy the Garth Woodside and started their own bed and breakfast.
John and Julie Rolsen are only the sixth owners of the mansion in its 100+ year history and have turned it into a premier destination for romantic getaways, Missouri weddings and intimate escapes. With eight luxury rooms, three cottages, jetted soaking tubs, working fireplaces, and a hearty multi-course breakfast every morning, Garth Woodside Mansion guests are ready to start the day exploring the Hannibal area bright and early.
