Decorating Tips for the Holidays

The holidays are quickly approaching, and that means it’s time to start decorating! Instead of going to the store and buying the typical seasonal sparkles, why not get a little crafty and make your own unique decorations? With tips from the innkeepers at Chehalem Ridge Bed and Breakfast and First Farm Inn, your home will be holiday-ready in no time.

Holiday DIY Decorating with Chehalem Ridge Bed and Breakfast, OR

Kristin, innkeeper at Newberg, OR-based Chehalem Ridge Bed and Breakfast, suggests these few easy decorating DIYs:

  1. Seasonal Shrubs: Take a small, potted evergreen shrub and dress it up for the season. Add a white bow for an elegant touch, and embellish with festive accents like metallic tinsel and sprigs of holly berries.
  2. Cheers-y Snowmen: Say cheers to these adorable snow people, made with leftover champagne corks!  Paint them white, add eyes, a mouth, black buttons, and an orange nose. Use a pipe-cleaner as a scarf and twist one into earmuffs for even more personality  This is a great craft for the kids or a group of friends finishing off a bottle of bubbly!
  3. Tiny Trees: Small holiday trees are perfect for your office or small spaces. Add some cheer by painting the pots the trees are in and accessorizing with sprigs of holly, decorative picks, and tiny ornaments.

Voila! With these tips, it’s easy to bring the charm of a bed and breakfast to your own home this holiday season.

Make a Horse Head Wreath with First Farm Inn, KY

First Farm Inn, located in Petersburg, KY, is a horse lover’s haven. In the stable, guests enjoy interacting with the majestic, noble animals, and in the gardens and common spaces, they marvel at the beautiful horse-themed decor. During the holiday season, the “neigh” bells start ringing and the festive horse decorations begin decking the halls.

A horse head wreath is one of the innkeeper’s favorite seasonal adornments. Here’s how to make one for your own home using a variety of recycled and upcycled materials and supplies:

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Hot glue gun
  • Wire or twist ties
  • Two wire coat hangers
  • Ribbon
  • Silk flowers
  • Ornaments
  • Greenery garlands
  • Pinecones
  • Dried flowers or seed pods
  • Anything else that strikes your fancy

Steps

  1. Use the hangers to fashion a horse head. One of the hangers will become the head, with the point becoming an ear and the bottom widened to turn into a nose. The other hanger becomes the horse’s neck. Use the hanger or smaller wire to secure the two together. Then bend and shape the hangers.
  2. Begin wrapping the garland around the hangers, keeping the shape of the horse head in mind.
  3. Make it your own. Create a mane with a longer garland or, for a more unique look, choose a floral garland.
  4. To make a halter or bridle tie some ribbon around the horse’s nose. Then tie it behind the head to create a “T” shape.
  5. For the final touch, add an eye and a bow. Make sure there is an adequate amount of hot glue to keep the decorations secure.

With holiday decorating tips from two of the country’s most charming bed and breakfast inns, your home will be sure to sparkle as bright as the season!
