B&Bs in the Architectural Spotlight

Cozy fireplaces, gracious hosts, relaxing spa treatments, and delectable treats are just a few of the special things that guests encounter when visiting a bed and breakfast. But we should also tip our hats to the B&Bs that boast antique furnishings, hand-carved pieces, and historic adobe styles. You can celebrate these and many more inspirational B&B designs during National Architecture Week, which began on April 7 and runs to April 13.

The stunning architectural beauty of sweeping skyscrapers and intricate suspension bridges are a photographer’s dream. But if taking pictures of smaller scale designs is your true passion, the iron gates and beautiful adobe archways at Pueblo Bonito Bed & Breakfast Inn, located in Santa Fe, NM, will be to your camera’s liking. This 18-room inn, built over 170 years ago, is a historic adobe pueblo-style Santa Fe B&B. From the Vigas (wooden beamed ceilings), to the Nichos (hard carved wall niches) and unique wooden furniture, you’ll see beautiful architecture at every turn. Make your escape to Santa Fe’s historic district and unwind in front of a romantic kiva (bee hive) fireplace.

Do you want to sleep in a grand mansion like a king or queen? The Schenck Mansion Bed & Breakfast, located in Vevay, IN, impresses with its 35 rooms, four porches, seven balconies, eight chimneys and numerous windows. Architecturally, the mansion, built in 1874 by Benjamin Franklin Schenck, is known as “second empire” style (named after the second emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte). The inn still has the original slate roof, and the exterior trim is made of tin. Guests can soak away their stress in a private walnut cased copper lined tub.

If images of rolling fog and misty nights evoke thoughts of romance and adventure, East Brother Light Station circa 1874 in Richmond, CA, will not disappoint. This beautifully restored California Victorian five-room inn, located atop an island on the strait that separates San Francisco and San Pablo Bays, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can choose from four rooms that are located within the lighthouse, and one room located in the original Fog Signal Building. Upon arrival, enjoy champagne and hors d’oeuvres, a multi-course dinner with wine, and a full gourmet breakfast the next morning. This light station is a beacon to travelers who want to stay at a B&B with magnificent views, privacy, and the chance to experience a fun-filled trip back in time.

Along with the pampering and relaxation that await you, architectural treasures can add a touch of history and charm to your getaway. Visit our “‘Inn’-triguing B&B Architecture and Design” Pinterest board to see more examples of these unique B&Bs.
