Come on Over to Canandaigua

It may be smaller than its neighboring Seneca and Cayuga Lakes, but Canandaigua Lake wasn’t deemed the “Chosen Spot” by native Seneca Indians for nothing! Picturesque forests, lush meadows and wooded trails make it an ideal weekend getaway spot. Oenophiles will get their fill along the 41-mile Canandaigua Wine Trail or in hilly Naples at the southern end of the lake where the Naples Grape Festival is held every September.

Considering heading to Canandaigua Lake? Here are 5 reasons to coast over:

Red or White?
The Canandaigua Wine Trail, formed in the mid 1990’s, consists of five wineries and two wine centers including the New York Wine & Culinary Center. Learn and sip through a flight of Finger Lakes wines in the Center’s Tasting Room or take part in some of the classes and events held throughout the year.

Frenzy of Fun. If the summer temperatures have you heated, keep cool on the waterslides and in the wave pools of Roseland Waterpark. You can continue your water adventure at Kershaw Park where you’ll hop aboard the 19th century double-decker paddle boat, Canandaigua Lady, and take in lakeside views while enjoying a sunset dinner cruise along the shores of Canandaigua Lake.

Sight Seeing. Take a trip to the southern tip of the lake where you can explore the High-Tor Wildlife Management Area, a 6,200-acre natural treasure. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the scenic trails that pass through wetlands, pristine gullies and lush meadows.

Divine Dining. Looking to tantalize your taste buds? With an array of diverse offerings, including fine dining eateries and lake-side pizza parlors, there is something for everyone to indulge in. You also can spend an afternoon sampling tasty treats made from fresh local ingredients at the Canandaigua Farmer’s Market which features more than 30 vendors.

Restful Relaxation. Whether you want to stay smack dab in the middle of it all or off the beaten path, there is a Canandaigua bed and breakfast for you. Tucked away in the wooded hills on the peaceful side of wine country, the 3-room Chalet of Canandaigua offers a mix of rustic charm and modern amenities. Take a relaxing stroll by the Grand Pond or soak in the views from the second story porch. The 1840 Inn on the Main, located in heart of Canandaigua’s Historic District, is a spacious Second Empire Victorian featuring four guest rooms dressed out in period furnishings, a stately majestic oak split staircase and carved fireplaces. Spend an afternoon walking the nearby shops before taking a respite by the lake.

What Canandaigua Lake lacks in size it makes up for in fun. From wine trails and foodie markets to water parks and nature walks, there are plenty of activities to fill a weekend. See? Bigger isn’t always better.
