We stayed at Elm Cottage B&B for 6 wonderful days. All of the other comments are true. Janet is a delightful hostess and quite a good vegetarian cook. Breakfast was always different, and consisted of something hot, along with freshly made pastry, granola and jams. Delicious! We suggested she create a cookbook for her guests, with profits to the animal shelter. Whenever we came back to the house, she always offered a refreshment, even hot chocolate on cool days. We stayed in the Bayview room, which is the smaller of the 2 rooms. It was just right for the two of us. The view of the bay was wonderful, as was the morning sunrise. You can’t hear US 1 at all, even at night. Please note that this is not an appropriate place for children. Also, she has one very deaf, but loving, dog, and 4 cats, all of which usually stay downstairs. So, if you are allergic to dogs or cats, be forewarned. The house is about a half block to the bay and the Penobscot Marine Museum. Walk a few more feet and you’ll be at a full service grocery store. A few feet further are 3 different very casual restaurants. Searsport is a nice centralized location, especially if you’re driving. It’s an hour or less to Acadia, Bangor, Belfast, Boothbay, or Rockland.

As a surprise, I (vegetarian) took my fiancee (vegan) up to Elm Cottage on her birthday. What a treasure! We've tried our hand at vegetarian/vegan B&B's before, and never been that impressed. Janet was warm, friendly, and well-versed in our distinct food needs.

We showed up in the late evening, and were greeted immediately with a pot of tea and homemade pumpkin-spice bread, to be brought to our room or enjoyed in front of the already-going fire (of course we chose the fire!).

In the morning, we were treated to, quite literally, a feast. Tofu scramble, homemade scones and biscuits, homemade granola, fresh fruit, homemade soymilk, tea, orange juice, four different kinds of homemade fruit spreads, and two different kinds of butter. Sheesh!

Both in emails leading up to the night, and in person, Janet was very helpful with local suggestions, and very willing to play along with my surprise. Our dog was also not just tolerated but welcomed with open arms, which we very much appreciated.

And how can you not love a place featuring a one-eyed cat named Winky?

Janet, the innkeeper, goes "above and beyond" to be hospitable. Elm Cottage has only two rooms which take up the whole second floor (each with private bath) and she has remodeled and updated and furnished the entire home beautifully.

We stayed in the larger Gardenview Room which was actually created from two rooms and included a sitting area with a couple chairs, bureau, small tables, books and magazines, oriental carpet. The floor is of lovely old wide pine planks and much of her furniture was built by a local man.

Each afternoon when we returned, she offered tea or coffee (hot or cold) and a baked snack such a zuchini bread. Each morning, we took a stroll around the historical town and to a sea-side park each morning before returning to a huge and delicious vegetarian breakfast -- most items were vegan -- which was an absolute treat. Sample: apple crepes with freshly mashed blackberry topping, two kinds of muffins, home-made granola with soy or standard yogurt, fresh fruit bowl. That was just one breakfast.

Janet graciously moved a coffee maker each evening in the parlor for this early-bird husband. And she also made an early breakfast for us on the day we departed.

She's very near the Penobscot Marine Museum, right in the historic town of Searsport. She opened in July of 2008 and her prices are extremely reasonable compared on other nearby B&Bs. All around, a wonderful experience.

Our hostess, Janet, is an amazing chef. While the B&B is stated to be vegan/vegetarian she did an outstanding job dealing with my allergy to gluten and incorporating delicious and varied gluten free recipes as well. Her enthusiasm for sharing the highlights of costal Maine and its natural attractions enhanced our experience tremendously. The Cottage was delightful and Janet is an absolute gem.
