|Bed and Breakfast News|
The carnival of roses, teddy bears and yummy chocolate hearts I’ve been seeing in store windows everywhere is a clear sign that Valentine’s Day is almost here. It’s traditionally a day for lovers to whisper sweet nothings into each other’s ears and make romantic promises for tomorrow. So, where does that leave everyone else?
Singles, those newly single, girlfriends and even families are finding inventive ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day. The Avenue Inn Bed & Breakfast located in New Orleans, LA, has a really fun cure for any woman whose heart has been recently broken called “Breaking Up is So Hard to Do, But I’ll Get Over Him” and it deserves a Mary’s Mention. The package includes a copy of the book He’s Just Not That Into You by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo; two pints of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream including 5 flavors to choose from and a large spoon; a one-hour massage; three days of unlimited riding on the city’s famous streetcars; and a Voodoo doll with pins to help ease your pain!
I want to hear from you and invite you to click here and share your stories with me about what made a recent B&B stay an extraordinary getaway experience for you and worthy of your mention.
Do you have aspirations of one day becoming an innkeeper and owning your own B&B? At the 6th Annual Mid-Atlantic Innkeeping Conference & Tradeshow in Hunt Valley, MD (near Baltimore), you can join Mary White, founder of BnBFinder.com and author of Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies, and other industry experts for a one-day intensive on the “inns” and outs of owning your own bed and breakfast.
The Aspiring and New Innkeeper Inntensives will acquaint aspiring innkeepers with the business of innkeeping and what it takes to start and run a B&B. You will learn aspects of defining, researching, measuring and understanding how inns operate; see what the numbers look like and examine other aspects to help you make the right decisions; and discover how to market your inn and get the media to cover it.
Along with Mary, you will spend the day with industry experts including Heide Bredfeldt, who has been assisting current and future Innkeepers for over 30 years, and Bill Oates, who has provided education, operation and marketing services to inns and innkeepers for more than 30 years.
Mark your calendars and be ready to learn a lot and have your questions answered on Sunday, March 10, from 8am-4:30pm. The registration fee ($175 for first attendee, $100 for second attendee) includes seminar handouts and materials and a luncheon. As a bonus, materials for attendees also include Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies by Mary White and Netiquette by Holly Stiel! Click here to register for the conference and sign up for the session.
From lively jazz clubs oozing sensual sounds to hidden courtyards made for stealing a forbidden kiss, New Orleans, LA, has been known to cast a spell on couples searching for an amorous adventure. Blending French culture, sumptuous regional cuisine and architectural eye candy, The Big Easy exudes a romantic aura all its own.
What to Do: Are you looking to set the mood? Try settling in for a leisurely, romantic ride along one of the famous New Orleans streetcar lines. A trip on the St. Charles Avenue streetcar will give you a chance to rub shoulders while admiring the most spectacular collection of 19th century mansions in the U.S. Step off the streetcar at a stop near the French Quarter and walk hand-in-hand over centuries-old cobblestone streets to Jackson Square where the towering St. Louis Cathedral, one of the city’s most famous landmarks, is located. Explore the area’s shops, boutiques, bars and live music venues (which can sometimes mean a sidewalk or street corner) not to mention the architectural wonder of the historic homes in the area. Cap off the night with a horse-drawn carriage ride under the stars.
Known as one of the most haunted cities in the U.S., New Orleans is ripe with supernatural activity. You can scare up some fun and hold each other tightly on one of the many ghost tours such as Bloody Mary’s Tours and Ghost & Spirits Walking Tour. You can also get your hearts racing on The Old River Road Plantation Adventure Swamp Tour. Get up close and personal with alligators and take a trip back to a world of mystery and secrets deep within the swamps of Louisiana.
Of course, a trip to NOLA in February must include Mardi Gras, the free carnival celebration in New Orleans, beginning on the 12th or Fat Tuesday. Costumed revelers join seemingly endless parades through the city’s streets throwing beads and savoring King Cake, a Cinnamon roll-type cake with a plastic baby inside. Whoever finds the baby is responsible for hosting the next King Cake affair!
Where to Stay: The 5-room Chimes Bed and Breakfast is located in the picturesque Garden District near the boutiques and eateries along fashionable Magazine Street and the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line. Each of the rooms is dressed out plush linens and decorated with antique furnishings. Lovely French doors will lead you to a tropical courtyard where you can sit and get lost in your favorite novel or sip a glass of wine. Originally built as a private residence in 1848, the Marigny Manor House Bed and Breakfast boasts four spacious rooms with original detailing including ornate plaster molding and hardwood floors and additional features such as fireplaces, chandeliers, four-poster beds and antique furnishings. A traditional Southern breakfast made from local ingredients is served each morning in this beautiful Greek Revival.
