Mushroom-inn - Magic mushrooms came in handy for Alice in Wonderland when she was in a jam.  She could either grow or shrink at will.  Although we can’t promise you’ll find any of the mushrooms that Alice nibbled on her adventure, we can tell you that if you love this edible fungus, you won’t want to miss out on the Wild Mushroom Celebration at Boreas Bed & Breakfast Inn in Long Beach, Washington.  Starting October 30 through November 1, mushroom fans can get their fill of fleshy spores with an epicurean three course dinner at a nearby fine restaurant.  Guests will start off with sherried chanterelle mushrooms and goat cheese crostini followed by a main course of king salmon or filet mignon on wild mushroom risotto with chanterelle mushroom cream.  Dessert is a decadent chocolate truffle tart with truffle honey whip cream.  More mushroom delight awaits on Sunday morning.  The inn will serve breakfast entrees featuring six different wild mushrooms in season like triple mushroom frittata, mushroom pate and sausage gravy with mushrooms.  A professional forager will be present at breakfast to share her knowledge about mushrooms.  Mycophagist guests are invited to mushroom hunt with the expert following breakfast.

You can also have a gastronomical mushroom experience at The Shelburne Inn in Long Beach, Washington.  The inn will host a Wild Mushroom Celebration all month long in October.  On October 16, a visiting guest chef will whip up a wild mushroom dinner.  On October 20, guests will enjoy an Italian take on mushrooms with a respected guest chef who will serve a gourmet Italian meal with mushrooms.  On October 30, the inn’s resident chefs will make a special wild mushroom dinner.  If dinner seems too long to wait, satisfy your fungal craving earlier in the day.  The inn will serve a variety of wild mushrooms for guests to sample during breakfast, lunch and/or dinner.  Don’t miss out on the wild mushroom omelette with pesto cream sauce.

Recycled Goods - You’ve probably heard the saying, “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”  Find out for yourself at Dobson House Bed & Breakfast in El Prado, New Mexico, an eco-friendly inn that was built using 2,000 tires and 20,000 cans. The solar powered B&B is a natural adobe and sits 7,000 feet on a 100 foot hill. It’s conveniently located near the natural hot springs and overlooks the Rio Grande Gorge. Nature lovers seeking a little outdoor adventure can ask innkeeper to arrange llama expeditions, rock climbing, white water rafting, hiking and finish off the night star gazing. Don’t forget to get a taste of the southwest with a full breakfast that ranges from Mexican baked eggs with chicken apple sausage to Texas pecan biscuits followed by peach muffins, sweet potato pone and ricotta cheese pancakes.

If you’re looking for more of a traditional bed and breakfast that still offers all the benefits of a green inn, check into The Madeline Bed & Breakfast in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Built in 1866, the inn has preserved its architectural details and Victorian look, while adapting to the modern practices of a green inn. All appliances are energy and water efficient, all cleaning agents and products are naturally, environmentally safe products, gardens are watered with a drip system to reduce water consumption, regularly recycles glass, paper, plastics, installation of compact fluorescent bulbs and even the spa uses its own water treatment. Ask about the special spa package and indulge in a relaxing massage or spa treatment followed by a rose petal bath. Refuel in the morning with a full gourmet breakfast that includes organic fresh baked breads, homemade granola and hot entrees like southwestern frittatas and breakfast enchiladas.

Leafy Ideas - There’s no reason why leaf peeping during fall foliage should be limited to scenic car drives or hikes. Why not discover new ways to enjoy the fall season? Mary White, Founder and CEO of BnBFinder shared some of the most unique bed and breakfast fall foliage specials today on Martha Stewart Radio’s “Living Today” with Mario Bosquez.

Ever consider leaf peeping by the sea? That’s exactly what you can do at A Rendezvous Place Bed and Breakfast in Long Beach, Washington. The “Fall at the Beach” special is good for a two night stay and half-off on a third night stay. Grab a blanket or a chair and lay on the beach and watch green, gold and red leaves provide a backdrop against rolling waves. Keep a look out for a whale or two and walk along a paved trail along the ocean sand dunes.

You can also sail and peep at The Fox and the Grapes Bed & Breakfast in Lodi, New York. The “Sail Lake Seneca” package is a cozy package for two which includes a full gourmet breakfast, a two night stay, a day trip sailing on Lake Seneca complete with a picnic basket and romantic dinner for two. If you’re worried about getting sea sick, the inn also offers hot air balloon rides, helicopter rides and mid-week specials.

Get a bird’s eye view of the changing of the leaves at Rabbit Hill Inn in Lower Waterford, Vermont. Guests can zip-line their way down a mountain top and soar like a bird. Special autumn menu like wild rice pancakes with fall vegetables or Waterford pork loin with apples and wild mushrooms will give you the zip you need to regain your energy!

For guests looking for a more chilling adventure, look no further than St. Francis Inn in St. Augustine, Florida. The oldest inn in the oldest city also has one of the oldest guests at their inn. “Lily,” the inn’s permanent visitor is said to walk aimlessly around the inn grieving for a lost lover. Guests have noted strange sounds, small pranks, falling books and even moving pictures. Ask for the “Paranormal Paranoia Package” to learn more about ghosts in St. Augustine and a ghostly walking tour.

Gothic lovebirds can also plan the wedding of their dreams this fall at Canyon Ferry Mansion B&B Lake Inn in Townsend, Montana. The “Halloween Town Gothic Elopement/Wedding” lets couples say “I do,” at midnight decked out in black. Heavy organ music sets the tone for the ceremony followed by a celebratory red velvet cake. The inn provides special picnics and maps of nearby ghost towns for the happy newlyweds.

Unfortunately, the fall themed interview left little time for Mary to share her other suggested recommendations such as: Mayhurst Inn in Orange, Virginia; The Franklin Victorian Bed & Breakfast in Sparta, Wisconsin; Whitney’s Inn in Jackson, New Hampshire; The Groveland Hotel at Yosemite National Park in Groveland, California; Rosewood Country Inn in Bradford, New Hampshire; Gettysburg Battlefield Bed & Breakfast in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and the Inn at Herr Ridge in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Don’t fall behind on your travel plans. Find more of the season’s best specials on our specials page or use the keyword search box to find a bed & breakfast in your town.

Trapper Keeper - Forget what mom told you.  It’s okay to play with your food at Briarcliffe Inn in Bedeque, Prince Edward Island.  The quaint, Canadian seaside community is a paradise for seafood aficionados with interactive specials that lets guest connect intimately with their food, as well as bond with the locals.  Sail out with an experienced lobster fisher and trap your own crustacean with the “Lobster Lover” special, while listening to the history of lobster fishing as well as lessons on basic anatomy.  Enjoy the rest of the tour by eating a cooked lobster onboard while sailing past Governor’s Island.  If you prefer shells to crustaceans, sign up for the “Tong and Shuck” special and catch fresh oysters that you can shuck and taste.  Leave some time for the “Seaweed Secrets” special and learn to identify different types of edible and medicinal seaweed.  Put your knowledge to work and rake some Irish moss from the sea and finish the day baking and eating a seaweed pie, vegetable sea plant soup and dulse (red alga) biscuits.

Looking for a more vigorous water experience?  Stop by Bonshaw Breezes Bed and Breakfast in Bonshaw, Prince Edward Island and ask for the “Pillows, Paddles and Pancakes” package.  A two night stay includes a two to three hour kayaking session with or without a guide.  Start out from Victoria by the Sea and ease your way through the Northumberland Strait.  Take a dip in the warm waters and enjoy a light picnic break with cheese, fruit and crackers.  Inn provides a complimentary guide book on kayaking as well as beach towels and chairs.  Give your body a chance to recuperate in the outdoor hot tub and wake up to a five course breakfast that includes oven puffed pancakes with poached pears.
