Did you know that it takes 21 cups of chopped broccoli, 3 bananas, 3 cups raw spinach, 6 baby carrots, 3 cups cooked kidney beans, 2.5 ounces of chopped chicken breast, 3.5 ounces of cooked salmon, 3 ounces of cooked rainbow trout and 1 cup of almonds to get your daily serving of calcium, potassium, magnesium, vitamin A, phosphorus, protein, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and riboflavin. Or you could just take the easy route and drink 3 cups of milk. June is National Dairy Month, which means in addition to milk, you can enjoy other dairy favorites such as cheese, yogurt, ice cream, frozen yogurt and pudding. If you want to taste real, fresh dairy, spend some time at Rocky Acre Farm Bed & Breakfast in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania. The 200 year old dairy farm is the perfect pastoral setting to milk a cow, feed a newborn calf, round up some eggs from the hen house and eat a truly authentic country breakfast featuring: pancakes, waffles or French toast, sausage, oven-baked goods, fresh fruit, homemade applesauce and of course, fresh milk.

Dairy lovers can unite at Catskill Maison Bed & Breakfast in Windham, New York. The former Lawrence dairy farm may no longer serve milk or have any farm animals on premise, but you can still check out nearby farms. Ask the innkeeper for a picnic farm tour which includes a guided tour of farms from neighboring farmers and a personalized picnic basket that could include a bottle of wine, main course such as wraps or sandwiches, artisan cheese, nuts and a map. If you want to stick to just cheese, innkeeper can direct you to a local cheese maker where you can watch the cheese making process and sample various types of cheese. If you miss out on this tour, don’t worry. The inn serves ricotta, mozzarella and tilsit cheese for breakfast from the same local farm. The three course gourmet breakfast also includes grass-fed hormone-free meats and eggs, fresh fruits, muffins and breads and homemade jams and preserves. Save some room for more cheese on Saturday nights for a wine and cheese reception.

Find more farm fresh options at a Pennsylvania bed and breakfast or at a New York bed and breakfast. Or use the keyword search box to find a B&B near you.

  1. Of course considering the current economic situation it is but right to save money. But that doesn’t mean to eliminate fun and family bonding. Picnic is a thing everyone should enjoy.
