Some B&Bs are a cut above the rest… literally! Elevate yourself to the top of the world by staying at a B&B treehouse. At Vertical Horizons- Treehouse Paradise, a bed and breakfast in Cave Junction, Oregon, guests have the option to stay at one of the three tree houses. For ultimate privacy, request the Calypso Tree House, a state of the art tudor style treehouse equipped with a toilet, sink, refrigerator, bed and a charming bridge that connects to a small deck near the front. Plan for a technical tree climbing lesson in the afternoon, roast marshmallows in the evening and let Phil, the innkeeper spoil you in the morning with a lavish breakfast that includes organic fruits and locally grown food.

For a more luxurious and grown-up feel, head to Fire Mountain Inn, Cabins & Treehouses, a bed and breakfast in Highlands, North Carolina. Select from three premium tree houses, such as the Sassafras Treehouse, which is furnished with a king size bed, full bath tub and shower, private deck and a hammock. Order a gourmet lunch or dinner and catch the sunset, take a hike and explore the grounds and stop by the art gallery. Or choose to do nothing at all and hibernate from the ground up in your cozy nook, but just make sure you don’t miss breakfast! The seasonal menu features fresh, organic ingredients harvested locally or on premise such as chicken and eggs used from the chef’s own farm.

Alaska is known for many things including its beautiful terrain, bountiful wildlife and… sourdough!  Although San Francisco miners first popularized the tangy, chewy bread during the California Gold Rush, experienced miners in Alaska called, “sourdoughs,” continued the trend and added their own take on the bread during the Klondike Gold Rush.  One of the most popular variations is the Alaska sourdough pancakes.  At Alaskan Sourdough B&B, a bed and breakfast in Cooper Landing, Alaska, guests won’t wake up disappointed after tasting the inn’s “world renowned sourdough pancakes.”  The secret tasty recipe dates as far back as the 1800s and is topped with cranberries, blueberries or peaches.  Once you’ve cleaned your plate, build up your appetite for the next morning with an outdoor day fishing trip, nearby horse trails, hiking or experience a traditional Eskimo sauna.

If you prefer waffles to pancakes, stop by Big Bear Bed & Breakfast in Anchorage, Alaska where in celebration of Alaska’s 50th Statehood Anniversary, you can hear the history of the sourdough starter while enjoying all you-can-eat Gold Rush Sourdough Waffles with wild blueberries or garden grown raspberries, strawberries or rhubarb.  Waffles are served with Alaska birch and berry syrups, reindeer sausage and hash browns.  Carol, the innkeeper is also a certified tour guide and can help you plan your itinerary and direct you to the must-see tourist attractions and hot spots.

Author Virginia Woolf had a lifelong fascination with lighthouses, especially the Godrevy Lighthouse in St. Ives, England where her family spent time every summer.  Their summer home and the lighthouse served as inspiration for one of her most celebrated novels, To the Lighthouse.  Even if you’re not familiar with the novel, you can discover for yourself why lighthouses remain a popular destination and attraction.  Take a lighthouse driving tour at Brewster House Bed & Breakfast in Freeport, Maine.  The Main Coast Lighthouse Tour includes a two-night stay, guidebook to all the local lighthouses, discounted gas card, gift certificate to a local restaurant, a souvenir mug and some chocolates.

Besides lighthouses, Maine is also known for fresh lobsters.  At The Berry Manor Inn, a bed and breakfast in Rockland, Maine, take in the sights and the taste of Maine and request the “Lobsters, Lighthouses & Luxury” package that is available for the month of June.  The special includes two tickets to the Main Lighthouse Museum, a guided tour of the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, a souvenir book on lighthouses, handmade chocolates, two tickets to Captain Jack’s Lobster adventure and a voucher for a lobster dinner at a nearby restaurant.

There are a number of reasons why we should celebrate Mother’s Day but ever wonder how the holiday began? Mothers around the world can thank Anna M. Jarvis for starting the first movement in 1907 to recognize and honor mothers as a special tribute to her own mother who had passed away. By 1914, Mother’s Day became recognized as a national holiday to fall every second Sunday in May. This year, Mother’s Day takes place on May 10 and if you’re still looking for last minute ideas to impress mom, make some one-on-one time with her at Iron Corbel Inn Bed and Breakfast in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania for a traditional luncheon and tea. Mom will appreciate the thoughtful gesture and the delicious offerings that include bisque soup, tea sandwiches, scones and shortbread cookies with tea.

You can keep mom guessing with a special Mother’s Day package from Shining Dawn Bed and Breakfast Retreat Center in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Mom can forget her daily duties once she checks in for a two-night stay, high tea, a restful night of movies and popcorn or sundaes. After a peaceful night, mom will have plenty to look forward to by morning with a full breakfast and a jaunt to the local town where you can take mom antique shopping or try a short day trip to Gettysburg.

Mom-inspired getaways are not limited to Pennsylvania bed and breakfasts. You can find more Mother’s and Father’s Day packages on our bed and breakfast specials page or let mom choose where she wants to go and present mom with a bed and breakfast travel gift certificate.

The first recorded Cinco de Mayo took place in California in the 1860s.  Although it’s a regional holiday in Mexico, it’s become a popular national holiday in the U.S.  There will be a number of festivals taking place, but if you would rather have a low-key celebration, head to Hacienda Corona de Guevavi Bed and Breakfast in Nogales, Arizona.  Situated along the banks of the Santa Cruz River and near the Mexican border, this desert B&B is the prime place for your own fiesta.  Invite your best buds, sip complimentary margaritas and learn how to make and eat authentic tamales.  Dinner includes beans, tortillas, salsa, guacamole and dessert.

Or make 5 your lucky number and check in at Songbird Prairie Bed and Breakfast in Valparaiso, Indiana.  Guests can book a two-night stay and save $55 on the second night.  Be sure to request a special holiday breakfast that includes Mexican omelets with jalapenos and salsa on the side.

Find more unconventional Cinco de Mayo celebrations at an Arizona bed and breakfast or at an Indiana bed and breakfast.  You can also use our advanced search box to find more B&B options.
