- Follow the Washington Heritage Trail located in the Eastern Panhandle; it’s a historical journey through some of America’s most beautiful countryside. Endearing small towns, fertile farmland, green forests, and panoramic river overlooks dot the land. Beginning in 1748, George Washington spent a lot of time in what is now West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle, and he bought his first piece of property in 1750. By 1777, he owned more land and began spending summers in the area. The quaint town of Shepherdstown in the Eastern Panhandle is a short drive to Baltimore or Washington, and other nearby towns with numerous historical sites include Martinsburg and Berkeley Springs- famous for Berkeley Springs State Park and its warm mineral water baths.
