West Virginia, also known as the Mountain State, has tons of places worth visiting, from cities like Buckhannon, Charleston, Charles Town, Glen Dale, Huntington, Morgantown, Parkersburg, and Wheeling, to small towns like Shepherdstown, Hinton, Summersville, and Charles Town. While in West Virginia, explore the museums, spas, and caves, or go hiking, biking, rock climbing, shopping, hunting, or fishing.
A favorite among hikers, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail winds its way through 14 US states, West Virginia being one of them. The trail is 2,167 miles long and can be accessed for a pleasant day hike or even a multi-day or multi-week trip (for the serious hiker/backpacker).
Berkeley Springs State Park is another favorite, noted for its healing waters that have attracted people from a wide area – it's a great destination. Monogahela National Forest is where both the Potomac and the Ohio Rivers rise, giving breathtaking views from the Seneca Rocks. The forest is a large natural area, home to a wide variety of plants and animals. Activities available include biking, snowshoeing, hiking, camping and fishing.
The state capitol of West Virginia, Charleston, is another great destination. Considered by many to be the best looking state capitol building in the United States, the Charleston State Capitol Building is a fine example of public building architecture. Even though its design is similar to most capitol buildings, the Charleston State Capitol is fronted by Corinthian columns and has a large gold dome on top, one of the things making it architecturally unique. |
