- The San Juan Islands are accessible only by air or boat, and most popularly by the ferry from Anacortes. There are 172 islands in San Juan County, however San Juan Island, Orcas Island, Lopez Island, and Shaw Island are the four that are served by ferries and host the vast majority of lodging, dinning and tourism activities. Camano Island is a relaxed island with art galleries, Cama Beach State Park, Camano Island State Park and Iverson Spit. Lopez Island is the first ferry stop on the route from Anacortes and is a great spot for walking along beach trails, kayaking or biking. San Juan Island is home to Friday Harbor, the Whale Museum, Lime Kiln Lighthouse, Roche Harbor, San Juan Island National Historic Park, Wescott Bay Sculpture Park and some of the best whale watching sites. Orcas Island offers panoramic views of islands from atop Mount Constitution in Moran State Park. Here guests can find lakes for swimming, fishing, camping, hiking trails and Westsound and Deer Harbor. Anacortes is situated on Fidalgo Island and is connected to Whidbey Island and the mainland through the Skagit Valley.
