Built in 1818, the Inn at the Crossroads's original financier was Dabney Carr Jr., nephew of Thomas Jefferson. Located in Charlottesville, our bed and breakfast is listed on the National Historic Register and is a certified Virginia Landmark. The Sutherland family, the original inkeepers, had 16 children. Three of their sons born in the Inn fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War The Inn is surrounded by hundreds of open acres but is still only 10 minutes from Monticello, the University of Virginia, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Skyline Drive and the Appalachian Trail.

The central location of The Inn at the Crossroads provides our guests with many options for both leisure and activity. You can visit Charlottesville's art galleries, museums, theaters, and antique shops. Take a tour of historic downtown Charlottesville or enjoy the Dogwood festival, Garden Week, the Albemarle County Fair or the Foxfield Steeplechase. For sports enthusiasts there are canoeing and tubing on the James River, skiing, tennis, golf, and hiking in the nearby mountains.

The Walton's Mountain Museum is 15 minutes away and is open April through October. Within 20 minutes are over a dozen vineyards and Montpelier is about 25 minutes away. Within one hour are Appomattox, Poplar Forest, Wilderness and Chancellorsville Battlefields. The Inn remains true to it's 19th century heritage not going through any major renovations since 1855 with the exception of the addition of private baths.

The foothills of Virginia are gentle and unassuming. Rising east of the Blue Ridge Mountains and west of the coastal lowlands, this idyllic Virginia countryside looks very much the way it did when Thomas Jefferson chose to build his beloved Monticello. Bicycle, walk, or drive along the rolling hills of vineyards and pastures.
