Nestled high in the heart of the Green Mountains of Northfield, Vermont, the Northfield Inn Bed & Breakfast is just minutes from Montpelier and Barre, the granite capital of the world. Framed by scenic mountains, the Northfield Inn B&B is set on a hillside overlooking the village of Northfield and the historic campus of Norwich University, America’s first private military college.

This is not so much a rating of the Northfield Inn as it is a complaint about what transpired upon our arrival. My wife and I were travelling to Vermont for a family wedding. I investigated listings of B&Bs in north-central Vermont, as the wedding was in the Randolph area. The Northfield sounded perfect for our stay. I reserved a room for a three night stay. I received a confirmation of that reservation on January 9, 2010, "We have reserved a luxury room with private bath which also includes our full, multi-course, gourmet breakfast each morning as well as a full buffet available to you throughout the day and night... plus a selection of wines in the evening." We arrived at approximately 3:00 p.m. on the 24th. We were greeted by the owner/innkeeper. We were made to feel welcome, until she told us of our "accommodations". We were assigned to a third floor room with a shared bath. You can plainly see that this does not fit our confirmed reservation. We pointed this out to our hostess, and were told that we had better keep that reservation because we would not find anything else. She tried to sweeten the pot by offering three nights in the future, this was our first and our last visit to Vermont. The offer all seemingly generous was of no value to us, and did not address the failure to live up to our reservation. We were able to find substitute reservations closer to the wedding site, but still had a bad taste in our mouths. When seeking and securing substitute accommodatios we encountered some extremely helpful and sympathetic B&B owners. They were all warm and helpful, unlike the hostess at the Northfield. Incidentally this incident was not a revelatory event for the other owners, apparently our hostess is somewhat notorious for this type of behavior. I would never return nor would I ever favorably rate the Northfield Inn.
Response
Unfortunately for everyone involved, Daniel & Susan arrived a bit too early before we had an opportunity to have a mess cleaned up including a broken toilet in the luxury room they were slated for. The week of June 19th thru June 26th was Residency Week for the Norwich Graduate School for which we have a 7-day minimum and had a full house. We had one of our student guests volunteer to bunk-in with another guest in a room with two beds so that we could accommodate Susan and Daniel for the first night until we could get a plumber to make repair and replacement the next day. When we tried to explain they merely huffed off and left unwilling to even look at the room because it shared two bathrooms on the third floor. We have a beautiful and immaculate Inn and most of our guests are University related. The majority of the Graduate School students are CEO's or executives of major corporations, professionals or high ranking military officer who don't wish to live in the dormitories for the week they are required to serve the residency reqirement prior to Commencement. We deeply regret the occurence and that we did not have the opportunity to explain and to serve Mr. & Mrs. S. It is also regretable that Mr. & Mrs. S. felt it necessary to add their final comment. We know all the hotel, Inn and B&B owners in this entire area and they are all exceptionally kind and very professional people and as Vermonters they would never make a disparaging remark about anybody! We sincerely wish Mr. & Mrs. S only ideal health and good fortune and with best regards.
