This was the first stay in a B & B anywhere for both my husband and myself. Prior to this trip, I actually said that I am really not a B & B type person. However, after staying in this amazing home (we had the quilt room), eating the awesome food, and talking to some really nice fellow guests at breakfast, I would have to say that my attitude has definitely changed. Because of Alley-McKay house, I would definitely stay there or at another B & B in the future. Thanks for a wonderful time! It could not have been better!

The owners overbooked my room, even after a 2 month advance notice, and correspondence up until the day before arrival. They tried to make it right by putting my child and I up elsewhere and allowing us to eat at their Inn.
However, they put us out even after 2 different parties that did stay there had booked well after our booking.
The place we were put up at could have accommodated the other parties just the same. We had arrived a day before the other parties,as well.
It boiled down to financial gain. It was more expensive for them to have put the other parties up in the other location. I only booked going to the town due to this particular B&B. They only have 7 rooms, yet still have difficulties keeping reservations straight.
They seem to use their business Facebook page for personal attacks on anyone who complains, even though the complains were made in a very constructive way. While it is a cute B&B, there are no communal rooms other then the dining room, they have lovely snacks available all the time, they simply have some issues with reservations and attitudes towards any criticism.
Response
We are very sorry about the confusion over this reservation. The guest was told when she arrived about the problem - as that is when it was discovered. We contacted the guest who was in the room she requested - even though it was booked prior to her request - but they were 4 hours from home already headed towards us. There was one booking made after her reservation request - which was not made in the normal booking methods (phone or online) and was placed in the middle of a group of questions so it was overlooked. We made a mistake. We admitted that. When her request came, we were trying to recover from the house getting struck by lightening and going back and forth to the hospital. No excuse, but the truth of what happened. We found her a location which had rooms, paid for it as well as her Thanksgiving luncheon meal, dinner, breakfast at our inn, and a tin of snacks and goodies to take to the other inn all at her original quoted price which was far below the end costs. The only other party we could have moved was a family of 5 which included an infant and we are the only inn in town which accepts infants and has a room which could accommodate that family. We felt it was easier to apologize and move a parent and a pre-teen son than a family of 5. We are really sorry the guest was unhappy with our best attempt to rectify a bad situation.

I stayed with Hugh and Darla in Oct 2008 (BnBfinder.com only goes back to 12/2009). I was having a huge and horrible issue and they became my saviors for the week or so I needed to get back on my feet.
I was in the cottage room the "Rustic Keeping Room" which is absolutely wonderful. The tub is the best stress reliever ever. I absolutely love the porch and the privacy was just what I needed. Although I didn't get to enjoy breakfast due to my wacky 2 job schedule I did enjoy home made treats that were the best. Thanks so much to Hugh and Darla lifesavers!

I have stayed at this B&B on three different visits with 9 friends - The house is great - the food outstanding - the owners treat you like family - I have done the Candlelight tour of homes for several years in Jefferson - so I have seen about every house in town -I would not consider staying anywhere else. I love McKay House - I hope to turn in Jan or Feb.2011 - I know Hugh and his family will make us have a great weekend as always. I highly recommend McKay House to anyone. P.S. I am not a relative or someone who talks to Hugh on a regular basis - just someone who loves to travel and appreciates great places to stay.

Me and my wife and family have stayed and absolutely loved it. This is an elegant and charming bed & breakfast, and found it to be charming, clean, large and very comfortable. Hugh and Darla couldn't have been friendlier. I found the complimentary high speed internet very convenient. The complimentary breakfast was excellent. Me and my family will always stay at the Alley-Mckay House Bed & Breakfest Inn as a matter of fact we will see you soon.

The breakfasts were fantastic! It stormed Saturday night and when we got back to the inn it was pouring down rain and Hugh met us at the car with an umbrella and when we left the lights on in the car he went back out while it was still pouring rain and turned the lights off. Excellent service and a great place to stay.

It was like staying with family. The couple who owns it treats guests like family. The antiques are beautiful and the rooms are beautifully furnished. It was nice sitting on the front porch relaxing. Great experience.
