Earlier in the year I decided to go on my first solo road trip that was inspired by my Aunt. She told me about a carnival she attended once a year when she was a little girl, the renowned Quebec Winter Carnival. I wanted to attend every moment of it and also to take in the rich culture and history Quebec City had to offer.
Dismayed by the prices of the major hotel chains in Quebec City I began looking for other options and also considering the fact that my trip would be much shorter then intended. After searching the web for various hotel deals I finally came across the Auberge Amerik on Craigslist. To me, the deal that was offered was very competitive against the other rates I was finding. Immediately I contacted the owner of the Auberge, Francois. He informed me what the neighborhood was like, how far I was from the festivities and what I could expect in terms of the people who were staying at the Auberge. I was sold. I set off on my trip and arrived to find one of the most welcoming gentlemen I have ever met in my life.
The Host
Francois was not just a host but a welcoming person who I quickly and easily befriended. His openness and kindness where just a few things that made my stay at the Auberge even more enjoyable. Although I had brought my own itinerary, Francois would sit down with me and pull out all sorts of maps that would guide me through Quebec City. In addition, he would offer suggestions as to what I could do outside of the festivities at the carnival and where I could go. He even went so far as to suggest a day trip to the Ice Hotel. I went with him and a German girl who was also staying there at the time. We had a blast! Also, his suggestions on where I could eat earn the man more bonus points of being a great host in my opinion. His knowledge of Quebec City and the area around the city are second to none. I had more then my fair share of things I could do while staying there. In short, Francois is the kind of host that you could sit down and chat and even have a few beers with (as I did) as if you knew him for years. The host gets a 10/10 in my books!
The Auberge
When I found the place on the net, I was shocked at how beautiful the pictures were. And to be honest, I felt as though that my expectations may not be met for I was not sure as to when the photographs of the place were taken. Well, when I arrived and was taken to my room, I was astonished at how beautiful it was. I stayed in what was called the Blue Room, which had its own washroom. Francois was also kind enough o provide me with my own mini-fridge. In addition to my room, there was an entertainment/lounge area downstairs across the dining area where you could play ping pong, watch TV on a big HD tv, and lounge on the comfortable couches. All of which I did. The dining area was nice and the kitchen area provided all the provisions needed to cook your own meals if you wished to do so. Take the pictures of what you see on the Auberge’s website to heart. What you see is what you get, a beautiful place to stay. As for the Auberge, it earns a 10/10 and would HIGHLY recommend anyone to stay there
The People
One final note I would like to make about the Auberge was the people who were also staying there. There were many young people, around my age, who were from Europe that came there to experience a different culture and a different country. Pretty much doing what I was doing. I easily made friends with most of the people who were there. As I mentioned, I was travelling alone and did not know anyone when I arrived. However, over the course of my stay there I was hanging out with most of the people there. Some of the people staying there were kind enough to invite me to join them on a day of skiing, an after party following one of the famous Night Parades during Carnival, playing ice hockey in Old Quebec, watching movies and much more. I really had a blast and it was one of the greatest trips I ever went on which I attribute to Francois, the Auberge and the people who were there at the time. I know for 100% certainty that I will return one day. Most likely during the summer and maybe again during the winter. I can go on and on about where to go and what to do while you stay there, but I think I will leave it at that.
I will leave you with a quote Francois left me before I left,
“La joie est en tout, il faut savoir l’extraire.”
“Joy is everywhere; you have to know how to extract it.” Confucius
Thank You for taking the time in reading my review

The Auberge Amerik was everything my husband and I were looking for. Within walking or busing distance of everywhere we wanted to see, we loved how we didn't need to spend money on taxis every day! The occupants all had interesting backgrounds and they made evenings lively and interesting. We were staying while the Olympics were going on so there was a fun, lightly competitive air to evening conversations.
Quebec was wonderful, a beautiful city with a great atmosphere. A must-see part of Canada.
