The spacious dining room and kitchen have were also refurbished, while guest rooms were simply decorated with an eclectic assortment of period pieces, brightly patterned fabrics, and walls painted in pastels.

"If you are coming to the mountains, come all the way up,'' read the advertising slogan of the Balsam Mountain Inn when this Colonial Revival structure opened in 1908. In those days, visitors traveled via the Southern Railway to the old Balsam Depot, which was once the highest railway station east of the Rockies, at an elevation of 3500 feet.

One of our two enormous 'tower suites', room 334 takes up most of the southeast corner of the inn's third floor. A living room fills the top of the actual tower, adjoined by an invitingly warm red bedroom. Views from this suite are to the south and east over lawn and forest to distant mountains.
