I have visited Newfoundland four times. On three of those visits I’ve stayed at Wild Roses B&B in Goulds, run by Mary Ridgeley. All three times I have been there to hike the East Coast Trails, and have taken advantage of the “Hiker’s Package” she offers. This includes runs to and from the airport at no extra charge.
The Hiker’s Package also includes drop off and pick-up at the trails, and three meals a day. There is always more than enough to eat at breakfast! It is served when you get up (she told me she doesn’t have a set time because people are on vacation). She makes sure you get a taste of Newfoundland (toutons, fish and brewis, molasses), and it is probably the only B&B where a person can stay and gain weight while hiking. For lunch she puts out fruit, energy bars, bread, and a variety of meats so the hikers can make a meal to suit their own tastes. When you return from the trails, there’s always a substantial dinner (including a scrumptious home-made desert) waiting. Again, she accommodates her guest’s schedule.
Typically the only meal served those who do not avail themselves of the hiker’s package is breakfast. However, they are served the same full breakfast as hikers. In addition to the Newfoundland specialties, she serves tea, coffee, a variety of juices, several cereal choices, eggs prepared to taste, bacon, and toast and jam featuring local berries.
The accommodations at Wild Roses are clean, comfortable and quiet. There’s a TV in every room, but I preferred visiting with family and other guests. Also, there is no minimum stay required.
Mary is a caring hostess which makes me feel pampered every time I stay there. The first time I stayed at Wild Roses, my plane was four hours late. I was greeted warmly at the airport, and was treated to a cup of tea when I reached the B&B. (It was 3:00 a.m. by then!) Also on that visit, I underestimated how cold it could get out on a boat tour during May (hey, I’m from Texas). Mary pulled a warm jacket from her hall closet and gave it to me to wear so I wouldn’t get cold. One time after a cold, rainy hike, she greeted my husband and me with a thermos of hot tea!
My most recent visit was my first time to stay there when she had a full B&B. I thought she might cut corners a bit, but not at all. She was as generous and caring and kind as always.
If you are staying in the St. John’s area, I strongly encourage you to visit this B&B for a delightful stay!
