The magnificently refurbished Baker House 1650 (formerly the J. Harper Poor Cottage) in East Hampton has been recognized as one of the finest luxury inns in the United States. It was named “Inn of the Month” by Travel and Leisure magazine, and Town and Country said the cottage “offers the kind of plush accommodations that you’d expect to find in an area famous for its residential real estate”. Time Out New York said “the most distinctive B&B on the East End is so mind-bogglingly gorgeous that it’s hard to believe anyone is actually allowed to sleep here.”
Each morning begins with a sumptuous breakfast served in the garden-side breakfast room, in the garden itself, or continental breakfast in your own room, delivered with your choice of morning paper. Local organic produce and farm products are used wherever possible. There are outside tables for eating, reading, or lounging, and drinks are served from a well-stocked bar including a selection of wines by the glass, bottle, and half-bottle. Single malt scotch, small-batch bourbon, champagnes and cognacs are also available.
For business meetings or family gatherings, the inn has a luxurious living room with a large fireplace. There is also a dining room with a fireplace and a well-stocked library with books, magazines, and DVDs, which can be borrowed for in-room viewing.
The Baker House is available for special events including weddings, private parties, and photo shoots. Many memorable weddings have been held in the beautiful house and gardens, starting with the wedding of J. Harper Poor’s daughter in 1915, for which a private train from Pennsylvania Station was arranged to bring some of the most distinguished families of the time to East Hampton for the occasion. We can provide the best caterers, event planners, and musicians to help you create an equally memorable day. Please contact us for further information.
The last thing one would expect in a historic 1648 house is a state-of-the-art spa facility, but this is what one finds on descending the paneled staircase leading to the lower level. A lap pool, spa tub, sauna, steam shower, and change room comprise the spa and although it is modern in every aspect, builder/designer David Tosher and design consultant Gary Jay Paul have created a room that seems to always have been there.
The Baker House is open year round. While many people see the Hamptons as only a summer resort, some of the most beautiful times are in the “off-season” - the changing autumn leaves, spring, when the first flowers emerge, and winter, when quiet walks on the beach and the cozy accommodations provide an ideal getaway from the stress of the city.
Guests can be picked up from the nearby Hampton Jitney/Luxury Liner stop, the East Hampton train station, or the East Hampton Airport (a 10 minute drive). Ample off-street parking is always available. The Baker House also offers private helicopter service to and from Manhattan (40 minutes) for those who wish to avoid the summer traffic. |
