Portsmouth New Hampshire's first bed & breakfast inn, the Martin Hill Inn, is located within walking distance of Portsmouth's shops, restaurants and historic attractions. Its two early 19th century, Greek-Revival buildings are situated on land originally sold by New Hampshire Lt. Gov. George Vaughn to the Martin family in 1710 for 50 British pounds. Over time, this area of Portsmouth became known as Martin Hill. The Main House of the B&B contains three guest rooms furnished with period furniture including queen-size canopy or four-poster beds. The Guest House of the bed and breakfast offers four rooms with queen-size spindle or iron beds, or king-size beds. It is connected to the Main House by a short, flower-lined, brick path and patio with a small pond and fountain.
After a busy day, come back to the inn and relax in the lovely perennial gardens that cover much of the property. Sit by the water garden and enjoy the serene sounds of running water as you plan for dinner at one of Portsmouth's many excellent restaurants. When snow blankets the gardens, settle into the warmth of the Winter Parlor.
The Martin Hill Inn has been featured in Country Inns magazine and chosen for two consecutive years as a Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England "Editors' Pick."

Everything was wonderful! The Inn was very clean and perfectly resembled the pictures on the website. The Innkeeper was very kind, hospitable, and knowledgeable about Portsmouth. Perfect location--3 minute drive to downtown Portsmouth, and had the weather been better, only a 10 minute walk downtown. Delicious afternoon tea after check-in and delicious breakfast in the morning.

We enjoyed our stay very much. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet and Margot made us feel very welcome. She was very cognizant of my boyfriend's dietary restrictions (diabetic), and provided us with an early breakfast so we had something to eat before our bike ride. We would love to come back.
