We had a very nice stay here with Gretchen. She was warm and friendly with helpful hints and just nice to chat with when we were around. We liked her home and found it a convenient location.

This is a quaint, cozy cottage within walking distance of shops and restaraunts right on the harbor on the quiet side of Deer Island in Acadia National Park. Gretchen is a wonderful hostess who makes the best popovers.

The setting in the heart of Southwest Harbor is great. We could walk to restaurants, shops and the ferry to the Cranberry Islands. The room was inviting and the food was great. This was my 14 year old daughter's first stay at a B&B and she really enjoyed it.

This is a real gem of a B & B in Southwest Harbor - the quieter side of MDI. The host, Gretchen, was welcoming and did everything she could to make our stay memorable - she is interested in you but without being intrusive and very knowledgable about the local area with lots of great suggestions for places to visit. The house is old and quirky but without being like a museum - you get a real sense that this is first and foremost a home. Lovely breakfast with a different cooked meal every day - awesome blueberry pancakes and popovers. We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend Penury Hall for a relaxing and comfortable stay.

We immediately felt right at home at this charming B&B. Gretchen Strong has been welcoming guests into her home for 30 years, and makes sure they are comfortable with her gracious hospitality. The rooms are clean and well appointed, bathrooms are spotless, and towels are replaced with clean, dry ones more than once a day! Breakfasts are substantial and delicious, and Gretchen has her own breakfast with guests and provides interesting and stimulating conversation. She also leaves homemade snacks out during the day and evening. Guests are encouraged to make use of the whole house. The atmosphere is very relaxed and we felt as though we were staying with friends. Gretchen has an encyclopedic knowledge of the area and was helpful with suggestions for where to eat and what to do, but did not intrude on our privacy in any way. The house is a minute's walk to town (Southwest Harbor), charming quiet town but with many amenities. We would definitely stay at Penury Hall again and recommend it highly.

Great hostess in Gretchen Strong who made you feel welcome and at home. She was a tremendous source of info, as well as, Johnie, her aide de camp, both directed us to great trails, sites, and restaurants. The rooms are spacious and very well kept lots of furnishings. Each room offers a large private bath. Breakfasts were delicious, varied and offered big portions with extras daily. The location in town is excellent and offers a wide variety of things to do and good places to eat in easy walking distance. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to visitors. If you are lucky Gretchen will teach you the lighting scheme for night owls.

Gretchen cooks a great breakfast and knows all sorts of things to do around the area! It is close to all sorts of mountain climbs, and there are all sorts of great restaurants and galleries a short walk away.

Thank you Gretchen for the excellent food & hospitality, and especially thank you for letting us watch the Red Sox. To anybody thinking of staying here, please do so if you enjoy being part of a relaxed household with a host who knows such a lot about the area and has time to tell you about it. We are now back home in England with many happy memories of our stay with Gretchen, Widget & Smokey. See you again someday we hope as there is still lots to do on the island. Howard & Liz

Wonderful heavenly B&B. My parents had stayed there 20 years ago, so we returned on their recommendation. It was very pleasant, excellent food and coffee in the morning. Excellent location in town also.

The Inn is charming warm and hospitable. Gretchen opens her house graciously and is very personable. She has a wealth of information that she can provide on Mount Desert Island and her town (she was the town manager for 16 years). The beds are comfortable, each room has its own bath (and a coverup if you want a robe), breakfast is substantial and varied. The house is filled with art and antiques - mementos of a lot of world travel. The house was walking distance to several restaurants, shops and a wonderful museum featuring carvings of birds (Wendell Gilley Museum). It is close to Acadia (well, everything is)...
