While convenient to my family home, and comfortable enough for sleeping, the interaction with the innkeeper was so strained I didn't even bother with the included full breakfast after the first day.
I had several instances, beginning with the greeting, where I was instructed after knocking on an open door and saying "hello" that I should have rung the bell, where I felt like a scolded child rather than a paying guest.
It was not my intent to keep special hours while staying there, as I had not seen my family in several years. When my brother arrived for a quiet late evening visit, he was greeted and warned of potential car door slamming and headlight usage in the parking lot.
I had another instance where I had hoped to grab dinner at the restaurant next door, but found it had closed ten minutes prior. I got back in my car and was going to head to a town where I knew there would be something open. (This is after all, rural Maine.) At 11 o'clock at night, the innkeeper came out of the house in her nightgown, barefoot to see what was going on. Though I owed her no explanation, I told her the situation and wished her goodnight. She did not leave. Finally, after an awkward silence, she said "This isn't the city, you know. Things close." I was astounded that I was being reprimanded in my own home area, and concluded the conversation as quickly as possible.
My experience at this inn made me stay away for all but sleeping. I sought to have as little contact with her as possible. I would not recommend this to anyone looking to be carefree on their vacation, even if they plan to be quiet on their return to the inn.
Response
When guests arrive, it is difficult for us to know they are here if they just walk in without ringing (as the sign requests at the door) sometime we thing they are guest that have already check in. Yes we were quite surprised to have company arrive to visit house guest at midnight while the rest of the house has gone to bed, (the repeated slamming of car doors and trunk might be annoying the others, something we do consider. When I heard a car running in the parking lot after midnght, I thought something was wrong, but was told very briskly that she wanted something to eat. Knowing that all the resturants here in town closed, and stop serving dinner that late, she firmly stated she was hungry and would drive some distance to go to Wendys. Finely, I too agree, I had little contact with the couple, as I felt they really belong at a motel where their coming and going at all hours was more suited at a motel where they do not care what goes on, not at a bed and breakfast. We try to make all our guest comfortable and they are our utmost consideration. Also this bed and breakfast is our home and consideration on the part of customers is appreciated. Many of our guests have posted their reviews on Bed and Breakfast.com thank you
