Our second stay with Larry at Sidwell and Friends. Easily the most elegant and well appointed bnb we have ever stayed at. His attention to every detail is just spectacular. From the fluffy towels to the towel warmers to the cleanliness, this bnb appeals to the most discriminating traveler. Breakfast is filling and tasty and there are snacks and beverages upstairs in the common area. And the bed, easily the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in. Need I say more?? We look forward to going back soon.

The Best Bed In The State Of Illinois - My fourth visit to Sidwell & Friends B&B was shared with friends from Northern Ireland and a newly married couple. It was a merry group all around, and the ambience and service at this Mt. Vernon B&B is always first class. But this time, I did something completely new. I stayed in the Pruett room, which is beautifully decorated in gold and royal blue with framed prints of the Mayflower and the Santa Maria. The centerpiece of the room is the most luxurious canopied bed with mile high mattresses. The canopy was hand-knotted in coastal North Carolina, and is a wonder to behold on a four-poster bed of the highest quality oak. A little foot stool is available to climb up into the bed, and once in you never want to leave! I felt like a queen or an aristocratic lady from the Old South, and what sweet dreams one has in a bed like this. Breakfast the next morning was served in two major courses with a fresh variety of berries, cereals, and the most delicious breads: chocolate, banana nut, and blueberry. The second course was a delicious basil strada and country ham with a choice of juices. Everyone had seconds because breakfast was so tasty and delightful. Sidwell & Friends is my second home, and now (courtesy of innkeeper Larry Sidwell) I can say I have slept in the very best bed in the State of Illinois!

We have been three times lucky staying at Sidwell & Friends Bed & Breakfast! We have visited in three different seasons, and each time we go, there are special garden, outdoor, and interior decorating touches. Larry Sidwell has created a luxury B&B in the heart of Mount Vernon in this carefully restored small mansion not far from Interstate highways 57 and 64. The inn is near the highways, but miles away in accoutrements, service, comfort, and quiet. Interesting dining options we enjoyed this time were really excellent Chinese food delivered to our door from Mt. Vernon’s China Buffet one evening and a catered event with several courses by Cindi Peterman catering. Being served with at a lovely decorated table with full silver service both nights made our dinners very special! Larry Sidwell’s level of service is what one would expect from a concierge in a five star hotel, and his delicious multi-course breakfasts are beautifully served with antique china and crystal. The art and antiques in this B&B will impress even the most discerning collector, and the library is full of best-sellers, biographies, and the classics. We are so comfortable at Sidwell & Friends that it is always hard to leave!

We are looking forward to our next visit to Sidwell & Friends in October. We couldn't even wait a year to go back! So wonderful is the hospitality, decor, food, and conversation. Larry Sidwell is the consumate host. He has personally seen to every detail in restoring this historic property, and attends to his guests with the individual service only available in boutique hotels or from an experienced concierge. He introduced us to the 9th Street Restaurant, which has an amazing wine list and menu. Sidwell & Friends is putting the "King City" back on the map!

What a lovely Bed and Breakfast! Beautiful house, great host, fantastic guest rooms and wonderful breakfast. Larry was most kind in giving us a history of not only the house by the "Sidwell" family. He was so free with his time in sharing the history and his story about becoming a innkeeper. We totally enjoyed our stay. The place to stay if you are visiting or just driving thru Mt Vernon, Illinois.
