Inselhaus bed and breakfast in Macomb, Illinois, just minutes from Western Illinois University, offers the perfect accommodations to explore all the fishing, biking, golfing, museums and wineries that central Illinois has to offer.
Inselhaus is one of Macomb's finest examples of houses built at the turn of the century. It was built in the Queen Anne style by Frank Blount in 1901. Many prominent Macomb citizens lived in this house. The original pocket doors are still used in the entry way, the formal parlor and the dining room. The spacious meeting rooms feature antique fireplaces with cast bronze covers. A beautiful oak staircase takes the visitors to the second floor guest rooms.
In October 2002, Karl and Dorothee Gossel bought the house to welcome visitors to the area and preserve a piece of Macomb's history. A full breakfast is served each morning and our private dining facilities are the perfect location for special occasions and events. |

This is the best bed and breakfast I have stayed in. The cleanliness was unbelievable, but what made it such a great inn was Dorothee the innkeeper. She could not have been more gracious in making sure you were well cared for, even including my daughter who was not a guest but invited her to breakfast each morning.

ROSE PETALS, ROMANCE & EUROPEAN HOSPITALITY AT INSELHAUS B&B
All year long, there are fine art and cultural events at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. The town square is full of interesting shops, two really excellent restaurants, and a tall and elegant courthouse in the center. We would never have gone to Macomb, which is in far West Central Illinois, except that we heard about the fine European hospitality at Inselhaus Bed & Breakfast. Our experience there surpassed our expectations, and German native Dorothee Gossel is a truly professional innkeeper. We arrived in late afternoon, and enjoyed fresh baked goodies and wine in the parlor of this fully renovated 110 year old mansion. The other guest and innkeeper provided erudite and sophisticated conversation before it was time for dinner. We dined on Macomb’s square with a bird’s eye view from the second floor of Shiloh restaurant, and the gourmet offerings were surprising, delicious, and beautifully presented. After lingering over dinner and enjoying a cool summer evening, we arrived back at Inselhaus to a bed covered in rose petals, champagne, and two glasses by our bedside. What a lovely night, and the bed and room were so comfortable and tastefully decorated. Every room at Inselhaus has its own scrupulously clean bathroom with new gleaming fixtures and luxury bath products from Gilchrist & Soames of London. Breakfast was served in bed at 10AM, and included eggs benedict, juice, and a fresh fruit cup with yogurt and granola. Since Macomb is so near the Iowa border, we crossed the Mississippi River to Iowa and enjoyed a tour of Keokuk and Fort Madison. Dinner was at Magnolia’s the second night, which is in another beautifully restored building on Macomb’s square with a Southern flair gourmet menu. We passed the evening in the enchanting company of our innkeeper and then retired to our lovely room #1. Coffee was served on the second story balcony and an early breakfast to accommodate our schedule was just as well-prepared as the previous morning’s meal. We learned that Dorothee makes gourmet breakfasts to go for visitors who must catch a plane or train very early in the mornings. Inselhaus is walking distance from the train and downtown Macomb, so Amtrak travelers won’t need a car at all. We also learned that the B&B is the preferred residence for visitors to Western Illinois University. We enjoyed the rest, romance, gourmet repast, rose petals, and Dorothee Gossel’s special brand of European hospitality!

I've stayed at the Inselhaus three times. The first two times were the result of a job interview at Western Illinois University, and both of these times the school put me up at the Inselhaus. This made the interview process that much more enjoyable. The third time was after I got the job and needed a place to stay as I looked for a home. Dorothee Gossel is a wonderful hostess and cook, and given the incredible experiences I had my first two stays, I made it a point to revisit the Inselhaus when I returned to Macomb. Every time I have stayed at the Inselhaus, Dorothee and her "posse" has provided incredible service including clean and cozy rooms, beautiful accommodations, a relaxing atmosphere, full course breakfasts, and wine and/or tea in the evenings to wind down. Dorothee is attentive to her guests, providing them with all of the help and suggestions they might need regarding the area, and without being intrusive at all. Most important, the Inselhaus takes a personalized approach: every guest is treated individually and as if he/she were the only guests. If you're staying in the Macomb area--or even if you're miles away and are looking for a weekend getaway--make it a point to stay at the Inselhaus. I know that I will continue to do so, even after moving to Macomb.
