I highly recommend Bishopsgate Inn to anyone looking for a cozy, unpretentious, authentic 1800's inn for a weekend in one of Connecticut's loveliest areas.
Bishopsgate Inn was highly recommended by another East Haddam B&B which was not available for 2/4/12. I contacted Jane Kagel and knew I had found the perfect B&B to celebrate my Mom's 81st birthday. Jane and daughter-in-law Lisa did not disappoint us. Lisa greeted us and led us to our room that was decorated with surprise birthday balloons, a thoughtful birthday card for Mom and individual boxes of chocolate for each of us.
Mom and I loved the warm, charming room and many of the period touches including a working fireplace, a comfortable four-poster bed and beautiful, wide floor boards. I had chosen one of the smaller rooms to stay in but we were able to view other rooms which were just as charming and cozy as our room but larger.
Breakfast was wonderful with our choice of yummy fresh fruit cups, home made waffles with real maple syrup and perfect, bottomless cups of coffee.
The inn was exactly what I was looking for- an 1800's inn with all of the charm of that period. However, the real treaure in this house (this inn feels like someone's home) is the mother-in-law/daughter-in-law team that made our stay extra special with their warm, sincere personalities. Jane and Lisa (with cameo appearances by Jane's husband Colin, Lisa's husband and sons) made us feel extremely welcome while respecting our privacy.
This was the perfect close-to-home getaway for me and my mom. A rating of "above average" does not do this inn justice, therefore it is rated OUTSTANDING.
