As the first Nevada City bed and breakfast...and one of the first in California...the incomparable Red Castle Inn has been acclaimed for its singular sense of time and place for more than four decades. On a quiet tree lined street in an uncommon wooded setting with unsurpassed views of the enchanting historic Gold Rush town, this Nevada City inn offers travelers a glimpse of what life was like more than one hundred years ago.
Lavish interiors only hinted at by elaborate Gothic gingerbread, are richly ornamented with sophisticated and unexpected artifacts reflecting decades of refined collecting. Each room is artfully arranged to open a window into the past, embracing all who enter with warmth and intimacy. Fascinating links to the 19th century are revealed at every turn, encouraging one's eye to explore and imagination to soar. The four story mansion offers seven guest rooms and suites: majestic, high ceiling rooms with Queen-beds on the first and entry levels; the middle level and top floor rooms are double-bed suites. All rooms have exceptionally beautiful private baths and access to private or shared verandas.

They were very respectful of the privacy of my wife and I. I guess you could say it wouldn't have been that hard. The place was huge. Their Inn flourished so much history of Nevada City inside and out. It was like taking a temporary step back in time to when things were more peaceful and tranquil. Don't get me wrong, although the BNB offered it's peace and traquility, it was only a stones throw away from old town Nevada City where you could mingle with other tourists as well as all the locals. The town offers many specialty shops and great restaurants with that small town feel. They also have a couple of fancy restaraunts to offer as well. And yes.... they also have a few bars and some wine tasting activities as well. . I would highly recommend the Red Castle Inn to anyone looking to enrich their romance , to celebrate another year of being together, or just basking in the richly historic ambiance this bed and breakfast offers. Major kudos to the nice couple who open their doors to those who appreciate the real treasures in life.
Thanks again you two,
Anthony and Val , Sacramento CA.

Staying there was almost like spending a few days in a museum after hours, but legally, without the fear of being busted.
The innkeepers achieved a perfect balance of accommodating a discerning traveler with the authenticity of how things were decorated in the 19th century. Everything in the house is authentic, down to the door knobs and floor boards. Sure, you will not find a mini bar or a TV in your room, but who needs that when you feel like you're back in the gold rush era? I'm not a history buff, but even I was in awe of the house and sensed all the stories behind the old photographs, tools, nicknacks and other wonders surrounding me. Luckily, Mary Louise, one of the owners, is a walking encyclopedia of stories about the house and Nevada City area and was there to answer all of our questions once we showed some respectful interest in learning about this unique place.
I especially liked that the owners were there when needed, but gave us plenty of room to enjoy the house by ourselves - another fine balance that is hard to find these days.
The rooms were outstanding, the beds were comfortable and I had a few nights of best sleep I've had in a long time. The inn is a short stroll from Nevada City downtown with many fine places to dine and wine, so not having to drive there was a major plus. A delightful breakfast every morning completed a perfect experience.
I am definitely coming back!

This Inn was exceptionally lovely and convenient to the town of Nevada City. A short walk placed us in the heart of the Old Downtown Streets. The breakfasts were amazing and the detail in this magnificent Victorian captured the feeling of the period of its design. Mary Louise was so gracious about answering our "period" questions. We would highly recommend this Inn to anyone wanting to stay in a place with character and charm!

This is a charming historic inn. It is warm and cozy and filled with wonderful period antiques. The breakfasts are superb. Innkeepers are very knowledgeable about the area, restaurants, history and the inn. It is a home away from home.

This was our third time staying at The Red Castle. It is clean, beautiful and the 4 story home is filled with victorian charm. The authentic breakfast menu is an amazing variety of antique recipes. It is walking distance to Nevada City. The gardens surrounding the Inn are sweet and are surrounded by forest.

Gorgeous Historic Inn Nestled in the Pines...
The Red Castle offers a charming old world inn with serene forested gardens, antique appointments, and a gourmet breakfast each morning, reminiscent of yesteryear. A stately four story Gothic Revival inn, the Red Castle is decorated in period antiques and rich oriental rugs that beckon you into a world of grand and gracious style.
If must have television and non-stop entertainment, stay elsewhere. But if you long for a quiet respite from your week and nurturing of your spirit, then stay at the Red Castle. From the moment you descend the twisted wooden staircase into the three-tiered garden that accents the inn, you’ll be wooed into a quieter time period that greets you with serenity.
Take the winding foot path from the inn to downtown Nevada City if you wish to explore novelty shopping, unique dining, and gold country sightseeing nestled in the pines. Enjoy! We have done so each year for the last 8 years.
