Our Favorite Romantic Snow-Day: The Best Place Ever to be Snow-Bound in the Adirondacks Remember the excitement you felt at around 10 years old when you awoke to hear that school was cancelled? You scampered up to the window seat and pulled the curtains aside to see a magical sugar frosting giving fresh, sculpted beauty to all the old familiar shapes – turning pine shrubs into ice cream cones and the front hill into the best sled run in town. Well, I had thought those magic moments would always remain safely in the past as a nostalgic childhood memory. But that was before the winter trip my wife and I took on Dec. 19-22, 2008. Those days became a lovely escape to a romantic winter wonderland, more beautiful and magical than any snow-days remembered from my childhood. We experienced our first real snow-day together at The Tumble Inn at Schroon Lake, New York in the heart of the beautiful Adirondacks. We meant to stay two nights for a surprise birthday party. But then, winter weather in the Adirondack Mountains of New York has surprises of its own. We were welcomed to beautiful Christmas decorations – the house looked like a genuine, 19th Century, Adirondack family home decorated for the season. There was always a beautiful fire in the main living room – a cozy room with two soft reading chairs, library shelves, windows to the road, and a door to the hot-tub deck, which offered a warm, bubbly retreat from which we watched the fluffy flakes fall. The bedroom was comfy and elegant, and we were given all the accommodations we asked for. We awoke to hot breakfasts that were, hands-down, the best and most plentiful we’ve experienced in years of B&B’ing. The first day it snowed 12 inches, followed by 16 the next day. The roads were too bad to travel on Sunday. Nancy offered the room for another night, including a great breakfast on Monday and a warm dinner our last evening there, so we did not have to get out on the roads. Nancy made sure the driveway and sidewalks were clear and safe for us. She maintains the hot tub meticulously, keeping it very clean and hot. She also makes sure a beautiful fire is always burning in the living room for winter guests escaping from the cold Adirondack winters. Nancy is one of the strongest, hardest-working and warmest women we have had the privilege to know, and guests keep returning, largely because of the friendship and camaraderie she provides. Our trip was planned for a birthday party, but after experiencing the natural beauty of winter in the snowy Adirondacks, reading and intimate conversations fireside, watching the sugary flakes falling around us as we sat in the therapeutic hot tub, and Nancy’s delicious hot coffee always within reach, we are going to make a point of scheduling an annual winter visit to Tumble Inn. There’s no better way to step back into the magic childhood experience of a lovely winter ferry land!
