Cancer doesn’t take holidays. But for eight survivors, the tranquility of a local inn is just what the doctor ordered.
Talking about life, cancer, and life with cancer. These are not light topics. But when eight women battling the disease spent a few days together at Ojai’s Lavender Inn, a welcome weightlessness checked in. Perhaps their proximity to a flower known to alleviate anxiety, depression, and stress helped. Or maybe it was the opportunity for the ladies to lounge around in their pajamas, like they did back when their worries were much smaller.
The retreat was part of a new program called INNcourage, created by the Lavender Inn’s owner, Kathy Hartley. Women with cancer are provided an opportunity to explore healthy lifestyle options while relaxing in a supportive environment—a place where stress is denied a room key. One of the first events of its kind, Hartley plans to not only continue hosting annual INNcourage retreats, but also to introduce the idea to the California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns in the hope that other properties will donate their settings for philanthropic causes.

The next day after breakfast, you'll join Chef Jim LaPerriere and start with a trip to the Eighth Street Farmers Market in Holland, one of the largest and most diverse markets in Western Michigan. While there, you will learn first hand what freshness is all about as chef Jim guides you through the maze of fresh and local foods, purchasing ingredients for your cooking class and dinner later in the day.
From there, you'll visit the either Lamberts’ Fresh Poultry and Seafood or Montello Meat Market on Michigan Ave. where you'll experience a true "old-fashioned" friendliness from people who have been purveyors of their trade for generations. Before leaving, being the knowledgeable sensitive bright em-powered woman that you are, you'll be able to pick out that ahi-tuna or petite filet for the dinner that night. Montello's uses the time-honored tradition known as dry-aging to naturally improve the tenderness and concentrate the flavor into your selections which have been professionally cut by the owner himself. Montello beef is hand-selected and grown naturally on local farms. Unlike today's conventional beef producers, Montello beef is never raised using hormones or antibiotics. Lamberts handpicks their fish up at the fish market in Grand Rapids almost daily so you’ll be assured that it was never flash frozen, always fresh daily to you, from Salmon to Cajun Catfish, Ahi Tuna to Swordfish, Ruby Trout, Halibut, or Jumbo Sea Scallops. These local fish lovers have done their homework.
As you and your girls work your way back into Saugatuck, you'll stop for a glass of afternoon glass of wine or a Sex in the City martini at Phil’s Grill, the local version of Cheers. This is a small, intimate, hip and groovy place with brown craft paper on the tables so you can play draw pictures and laugh about all the fun you’ve had so far with the ladies. After selecting some of your favorites to enjoy at dinner, it's off to Chef Jims kitchen where you'll strap on an apron and get a brief introduction to the evening's menu.
